Adam Sandler Open To Reviving 2 Other Classic Comedies After Happy Gilmore 2

In a recent interview with ScreenRant, Adam Sandler, whose legacy sequel movie Happy Gilmore 2 is releasing this weekend, addressed the possibility of reviving other iconic movies and characters in his filmography. Sandler had previously spoken about other ’90s projects he might be interested in bringing back for legacy sequels, while talking about Happy Gilmore 2.

Alongside other noteworthy projects, Adam Sandler gave us a 1990s comedy movie performance we can never forget in Happy Gilmore. After nearly 30 years since its release, there is a sequel, whose director, Kyle Newacheck, also hopes to make a Little Nicky sequel someday. While it’s a 2000 film, Little Nicky is in the same vein as Sandler’s ’90s movies.

As an actor with some of his best characters being from the ’90s, Adam Sandler, when asked about reviving other projects from the decade, said, “I’d love to do that”, about a potential sequel to The Wedding Singer. The full exchange, which includes Julie Bowen, who has reprised her role of Virginia Venit in Happy Gilmore 2, is as follows:

ScreenRant: Adam, I was reading an interview you gave a couple of years ago, when you were first flirting with the idea of doing Happy Gilmore 2, and you said you also had other ’90s movies you’d like to play with again. Do you know what The Waterboy‘s Bobby Boucher looks like in 2025 yet?

Adam Sandler: He’s not that great looking, I gotta be honest. He definitely let his hair go loose. But yeah, I don’t know if we’ll ever do anything like that. I’m so happy we did Happy Gilmore 2. I got to hang out with [Julie] again.

Julie Bowen: I’d like to see The Wedding Singer 2, thirty years on. You and Drew, still doing your thing.

Adam Sandler: That’d be fun. I’d love to do that.

ScreenRant: I think we need to close out The Grown Ups trilogy.

Adam Sandler: That could happen.

What Adam Sandler’s Comments Mean For His Career

We might be looking at more legacy sequels in his future

Adam Sandler in The Grown Ups 2

Happy Gilmore has found global streaming success on Netflix due to the hype surrounding the new sequel. However, many of Sandler’s ’90s movies, which have their own fandoms, continue to enthrall audiences without the promise of an upcoming sequel, because that’s the decade when he came into his own as a comedic actor.

While they’re often slapstick comedies without much substance, which is why Sandler’s comedies have chronically low Rotten Tomatoes ratings despite the crowds loving them, his ’90s films have a simple charm to them. So, the prospect of him revisiting more of these comedies for sequels like Happy Gilmore 2 is promising, especially because audiences still want those sequels.

Most of Sandler’s recent comedies haven’t performed as well as his classic comedies.

Most of Sandler’s recent comedies haven’t performed as well as his classic comedies. So, it might be in his best interest to revisit some of his works from that era. If movies like The Grown Ups and The Wedding Singer made comebacks, the audiences would go wild for them, and they’d introduce new viewers to Sandler’s iconic films.

Our Take on Sandler’s Comment About Revisiting His ’90s Movies

There are other avenues for him to explore

Adam Sandler in Uncut Gems

One of the best performances in A24 movies is by Adam Sandler in the Safdies’ Uncut Gems. It showcases the actor’s dramatic talents. While there are a few serious roles that Sandler has tackled during his career, that still remains a largely unexplored area for him as an actor, especially since he gave an Oscar-worthy performance in Uncut Gems.

Adam Sandler won an Independent Spirit Award and was nominated for a Critics Choice Award for his performance in Uncut Gems.

Sandler’s ’90s comedies have earned their reputations as endlessly entertaining classics, although some have aged quite poorly, and revisiting the better films will undoubtedly be worth the wait for fans of the actor. However, that further distances Sandler from experimenting with dramatic and grave performances, which he clearly has a knack for, and might be a more interesting trajectory.

Moreover, investing in sequels to The Wedding Singer and The Grown Ups relies on viewers being nostalgic. Happy Gilmore 2‘s performance is yet to be seen, but it’s possible, given the consistent underperformance of traditional comedies today, that it won’t be a good decision. Moreover, the tone of comedy rarely ages well, so this mightn’t be the best idea.
