Although many actors love jumping into franchises, Leonardo DiCaprio is one of the rare performers who has never done a sequel. Although many of his films tend to work as standalone projects, there are a few that feel like they would be perfect for some sort of follow-up movie.
Films like тιтanic, Don’t Look Up, and Shutter Island are all self-contained stories that wouldn’t really work in a sequel setting. However, movies like Inception and The Departed are both cases where fans have been asking for a sequel since they originally came out.
Picking and choosing which movie should be the one to return to from his legendary filmography is tough to pinpoint. Thankfully, there’s actually one movie that’s happening that would be perfect for DiCaprio’s first sequel and we all need him to sign on.
Leonardo DiCaprio Should Return For The Once Upon A Time In Hollywood Spin-Off
The Sequel Will Follow Cliff Booth
There is reportedly a sequel in development for 2019’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which would be the best place for Leonardo DiCaprio to work on his first sequel. Quentin Tarantino’s Academy Award-winning film follows a fading actor and his stunt double friends, who unexpectedly get caught up with the Manson Family while dealing with their own lives.
It sounds outlandish and it kind of is, which is why it works. DiCaprio was great as aging actor Rick Dalton, earning an Oscar nomination. His co-star, Brad Pitt, won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor and is actually going to be the focal point of the sequel.
Tentatively тιтled The Continuing Adventures of Cliff Booth, the sequel is set to be directed by David Fincher, an acclaimed director like Tarantino. Talented names have signed on including Elizabeth Debicki and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, with Pitt returning as the lead.
Given how great Pitt and DiCaprio were in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, we think he needs to return.
There is word that Leonardo DiCaprio is also in talks to return as Rick Dalton. There’s a chance that, if it happens, it could be a small part or a cameo but it would still be the actor’s first sequel. Given how great Pitt and DiCaprio were in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, we think he needs to return.
There are plenty of reasons why Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is so great, but that chemistry between DiCaprio and Pitt is right near the top. Whenever the two were on screen together, the movie was at its best. Any sequel needs that pairing in some capacity if it hopes to be as good.
Why Leonardo DiCaprio Famously Doesn’t Do Sequels
The Actor Feels It Hasn’t Been Necessary
Many fans have likely wondered why Leonardo DiCaprio has yet to do a sequel. Even actors who were seemingly against the idea in the past have gone on to make some, like Denzel Washington with The Equalizer franchise and Gladiator II. However, DiCaprio had a logical explanation for avoiding sequels (via Variety):
To me, every movie that I’ve done has been its own piece of individual art. That’s not to say I wouldn’t do something that has sequels. Some of the greatest movies in the world — ‘The Godfather’ — have had sequels. ‘The Godfather 2’ is fantastic. You read a script, it’s got a beginning and an end. It’s hard to envision that being resurrected again. It just hasn’t happened.
It’s interesting to hear that DiCaprio said he’s not against doing a sequel. That means there’s a chance he could return for the follow-up to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood or sign on for another sequel if the script calls for it. What DiCaprio said makes sense, so hopefully a sequel he likes comes along sometime soon.
