Acclaimed film writer-director Mike Flanagan’s latest Stephen King adaptation, The Life of Chuck, has been scheduled for digital release. Told in reverse chronological order, this fantasy drama depicts the life of Charles Krantz, played by Tom Hiddleston and Benjamin Pajak, from his childhood to his death, which seems to bring on the apocalypse itself.
The movie received spectacular reviews upon release, gaining an 81% Certified Fresh rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite the strong critical reception and winning the People’s Choice Award at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival, The Life of Chuck was a box office disappointment.
Neon has now shared that The Life Of Chuck will be available to rent or own on digital streaming on July 29, 2025. It will also release on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD on September 30.
What The Life of Chuck’s Digital Release Means For The Film
The Life Of Chuck Will End Its Theatrical Run With A Whimper
The Life of Chuck‘s digital release means that the movie’s theatrical run will have lasted almost two full months. The film debuted in select cinemas on June 6, 2025, and then screened in theaters nationwide a week later. This comes months after The Life of Chuck made its stellar global debut at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival.
Like most of his projects, Flanagan’s latest film won over many critics. However, this star-studded drama didn’t shine as brightly in cinemas. Box Office Mojo reported that The Life of Chuck made just over $10 million in theaters.
While The Life of Chuck‘s budget is unknown, the talent and high production values on display suggest it was an expensive endeavor. As a result, it is possible that this acclaimed movie was unable to recoup its costs in theaters, making it one of the least profitable Stephen King films ever.
Our Take On The Life Of Chuck’s Digital Release
The Life Of Chuck May Soon Find Greater Success On Streaming
The Life of Chuck may achieve a revival on digital platforms. Though The Life of Chuck was largely overlooked by audiences throughout its theatrical run, this was the case with another Stephen King adaptation: The Shawshank Redemption.
Both of these films are now considered among the best Stephen King adaptations in history, but The Shawshank Redemption bombed in theaters, despite critical acclaim. However, The Shawshank Redemption achieved its immense popularity when it was released on home video.
The past could repeat itself with The Life of Chuck now that the film will be available on digital release. The movie isn’t a traditional blockbuster film, but with its glowing reviews from critics backing it up, The Life of Chuck may attract a big enough audience on streaming to become a modern cult classic.
