Why Happy Gilmore 2 Took So Long To Get Made
It’s Been Nearly 30 Years Since The First Film
Happy Gilmore remains one of Adam Sandler’s best comedies and has gained cult status, particularly among golf fans. However, it’s taken nearly 30 years for the sequel to get made, and there are multiple factors that have contributed to that long wait.
After the success of the original movie, Sandler’s career took off with numerous comedies. He later signed a lucrative deal with Netflix in 2014, making the streaming service a natural home for the sequel. Still, Sandler waited to find the right story. As the star and co-writer of both films, he felt a responsibility to ensure the sequel honored the original’s legacy and wasn’t a disappointment.
Ultimately, the combination of creative considerations, tragic circumstances, and the timing of Sandler’s career all contributed to the long wait for Happy Gilmore 2.
Momentum finally picked up in September 2022 when Sandler said he wanted to make a sequel and had found the perfect idea. However, the pᴀssing of Carl Weathers in 2024, who played Chubbs Peterson in the original movie, required a significant rewrite of the script. Ultimately, the combination of creative considerations, tragic circumstances, and the timing of Sandler’s career all contributed to the long wait for Happy Gilmore 2.
