New Hunger Games Prequel Movie Has Finally Cast Katniss Everdeen’s Parents

Katniss Everdeen’s parents have been cast in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. The most recent Hunger Games book by Suzanne Collins follows Haymitch Abernathy during the Second Quarter Quell, which takes place 24 years before Katniss’ first Games.

Most of the key characters have already been announced for the Sunrise on the Reaping movie cast, including Joseph Zada as Haymitch, Whitney Peak as Lenore Dove, Mckenna Grace as Maysilee Donner, Ralph Fiennes as President Coriolanus Snow, Jesse Plemons as Plutarch Heavensbee, Elle Fanning as Effie Trinket, and Kelvin Harrison Jr. as Beetee Latier.

The Hunger Games now reveals that Scot Greenan has been cast as Burdock Everdeen and Grace Ackary as Asterid March. Burdock is Katniss’ father and Asterid is Katniss’ mother, with Sunrise on the Reaping being the first time when the names of Katniss’ parents are stated. Haymitch and Burdock are close friends during their time in District 12.

The latest casting announcement also shares that Melody Chikakane Brown will be playing Hattie Meeney and that Jefferson White will play Mr. McCoy. White also narrated the Sunrise on the Reaping audiobook.

What This Means For Sunrise On The Reaping

Katniss Everdeen’s Parents Are Officially Here

With Sunrise on the Reaping‘s production already underway, it is important for all roles to be cast. Even though Burdock and Asterid are not major characters, they still play an important role in the story, as they are part of Haymitch’s life before he becomes a tribute in the 50th Hunger Games.

Burdock and Asterid are needed for scenes that take place in District 12 before Haymitch is sent to the Capitol, along with after he returns home. Haymitch’s friendship with Burdock is vital to who he is before his life is upended. How their relationship changes after Haymitch wins is also important to his character arc and to the wider Hunger Games canon.

While many high-profile actors have been cast so far, Greenan and Ackary do not have as many credits to their name. Greenan’s most well-known projects include the movies T2: Trainspotting and Mary Queen of Scots. As for Ackary, she appeared in one episode of FBI: International, and this is her first feature film.

Our Take On The Casting Of Katniss Everdeen’s Parents

Sunrise On The Reaping Continues To Be One Of 2026’s Most Exciting Movies

Sunrise on the Reaping‘s release on November 20, 2026 feels closer than ever with Burdock and Asterid now officially cast. Between the quality of the story itself and the impressive cast ᴀssembled, it is easily one of my most anticipated movies set to come out in 2026.

Asterid appearing in the story was not surprising considering that she mentions Maysilee to Katniss in Catching Fire, but I was surprised by Haymitch being best friends with Katniss’ father. I look forward to seeing how these relationships are depicted onscreen in Sunrise on the Reaping with Greenan and Ackary as Burdock and Asterid.
