Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning Is At Great Risk Of Breaking A 29-Year-Old Box Office Streak

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning has proven to be another strong box office performer for Tom Cruise’s action franchise. While its budget ballooned to a ridiculous $400 million (or more), most involved should still be relatively pleased by how well audiences responded to it. The Final Reckoning has currently made $588 million worldwide after receiving an 88% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

That’s an impressive total in several areas, even if Mission: Impossible 8 won’t be profitable. Cruise’s possible final entry as Ethan Hunt climbed as high as fourth on the 2025 box office charts. The film is currently the sixth-highest-grossing release of 2025, having just been surpᴀssed by Universal’s How To Train Your Dragon remake.

Looking strictly at the Mission: Impossible movies, The Final Reckoning‘s box office has climbed to fourth on the franchise’s all-time chart. It topped ᴅᴇᴀᴅ Reckoning‘s $565 million gross recently. While it’s unlikely to catch Rogue Nation‘s third-place total of $688 million, the 2025 sequel is likely to at least eclipse the $600 million milestone before everything is said and done.

Mission: Impossible Franchise Box Office Chart

Movie

Worldwide Box Office Total

Mission: Impossible – Fallout

$791 million

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol

$694 million

Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation

$682 million

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning

$588 million

Mission: Impossible – ᴅᴇᴀᴅ Reckoning

$565 million

Mission: Impossible II

$546 million

Mission: Impossible

$457 million

Mission: Impossible III

$398 million

That’s a respectable total for the eighth film in a franchise that had to be drastically retooled after ᴅᴇᴀᴅ Reckoning. It should mean that The Final Reckoning will end the year as one of 2025’s top grossers. Yet, it is also very much at risk of being the first Mission: Impossible movie to not finish the year with a major accomplishment.

The Final Reckoning May Be The First Mission: Impossible Movie To Finish Outside The Top 10 Worldwide Box Office

2025 Has Some Heavy-Hitters Still To Come

Heading into the year, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning had hopes of being one of the year’s biggest box office performers. While it’s lived up to that so far, the grand total it will finish with is likely not going to be enough for it to retain that claim by the time the calendar turns to 2026.

The fact of the matter is that The Final Reckoning is only going to continue sliding down the 2025 worldwide box office charts as the rest of the year unfolds. It probably won’t be long before Superman knocks it down to seventh place, while Marvel Studios’ The Fantastic Four: First Steps is projected to do very well and could push Cruise’s action film down another spot.

There are still several other major blockbusters releasing from August through December that could also surpᴀss Mission: Impossible 8‘s box office

The problem is that there are still several other major blockbusters releasing from August through December that could also surpᴀss Mission: Impossible 8‘s box office. Avatar: Fire and Ash is definitely going to beat it, even if interest drops substantially compared to the first two films. Wicked: For Good could top The Final Reckoning even if it makes less than the first film ($756 million). Zootopia 2 could also be a huge hit, as the first film made over $1 billion.

If all three of those movies make well over $600 million, then the best-case scenario for The Final Reckoning is finishing the year as the 11th highest-grossing film worldwide. That would be the first time a Mission: Impossible movie didn’t earn a spot in the yearly top 10.

Back in 1996, Mission: Impossible launched the franchise with a top 3 finish at $457 million. Mission: Impossible II was the biggest box office hit of 2000 with $546 million. Mission: Impossible III finished in 8th in 2006 at $398 million. Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol‘s $694 million was good for 5th place in 2011. Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation‘s $682 million put it at 8th for 2015, and Mission: Impossible – Fallout finished at the same spot in 2018 after making $791 million.

Mission: Impossible – ᴅᴇᴀᴅ Reckoning barely kept this streak alive in 2023, as its $571 million gross put it at 10th and less than $2 million above the 11th place finisher: Disney’s live-action The Little Mermaid. Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning will need some similar good luck on its side to stay inside the top 10 of 2025.
