Disney started rocky in 2025. One of their most anticipated films, the live-action remake of Snow White, ended up being met with mixed reviews and a lackluster $205.6 million box office gross. The company has also been struggling, even with non-mainline branches. This includes the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movies Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts*, both of which made significantly less than other franchise films.
Most recently, Disney has also struggled from a Pixar perspective. In June, they released the original sci-fi film Elio. Competing in a busy month at the box office, the animated feature opened to only $20.8 million. Now, it is on the unfortunate track to become the lowest-grossing Pixar movie to get a full theatrical release.
These misfortunes do not tell Disney’s full story this year, however. For as much as they have struggled at the box office, they were also behind the first Hollywood movie to make $1 billion at the box office. Now, that movie is also doing well upon its digital release.
Lilo & Sтιтch Is Taking The Digital Charts By Storm
And It Beat Out Another Live-Action Remake
Lilo & Sтιтch is currently topping the digital charts. The movie was yet another live-action remake, and acted as Disney’s chance to redeem itself after the failure of Snow White. This version returned Chris Sanders to voice Sтιтch and introduced Maia Kealoha as Lilo.
While the reactions to the Lilo & Sтιтch trailers were fairly positive, the movie exceeded even general expectations. The film opened to an impressive $146 million domestically, beating Snow White‘s entire domestic run. At the time of writing, the live-action remake has now grossed over $1.008 billion worldwide.
As per FlixPatrol, Lilo & Sтιтch has become an instant success on the VOD charts. The live-action remake is now no. 1 among iTunes тιтles. In order to achieve this feat, it beat out the live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon, which has been knocked down to no. 2.
What This Means For Lilo & Sтιтch
The Film Has Had An Impressive Run
This achievement comes just one day after Lilo & Sтιтch first became digitally available on July 22. This means that the film’s digital debut has matched the success of its theatrical one, in a sense, representing another win for the film.
It also cements the movie’s victory over what once was its box office rival, How to Train Your Dragon. That movie had come out a couple of weeks into Lilo & Sтιтch‘s run, and also brought in big numbers. Lilo & Sтιтch is very clearly one of the most fruitful films of 2025 so far, and its success story is only growing.
