Netflix’s Biggest Fantasy Hit Has Made History In Light Of Streaming Dominance

Netflix‘s summer sensation has just pulled off something no other movie on the service has ever done. Though the biggest тιтles to come from the streaming platform this year are on the television side, with new seasons of Wednesday and Stranger Things on the way, Netflix has plenty of major movies too.

So far this year, the streamer has found success with projects like Back in Action, Havoc, and Straw. Even if they weren’t all critical darlings, they certainly garnered substantial viewership upon premiering. Still ahead on Netflix’s calendar are major тιтles like Happy Gilmore 2, Wake Up ᴅᴇᴀᴅ Man, and Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein.

Amid a number of buzzy, celebrity-driven releases, there is one Netflix movie that has become a surprise hit, and its success just keeps growing. Now, in its fifth week of release, it has achieved something very special.

KPop Demon Hunters Scores Its Biggest Week Yet

And It Did It In Its Fifth Week On Netflix

KPop Demon Hunters just scored its biggest week ever, close to a month after its premiere. The animated movie, which follows a K-pop girl group who moonlights as demon hunters, debuted on Netflix on June 20 and steadily amᴀssed a sizable fanbase. Earning a 96% critical score on Rotten Tomatoes, its success has even included beating real-life K-pop groups on the music charts.

Now, Netflix has confirmed that, for the week of July 14 through July 20, KPop Demon Hunters was the No. 1 English-language movie globally, pulling in 25.8 million views. In week 5, the movie managed to pull in its highest week of viewing since its premiere, a feat that Netflix notes no other movie has accomplished.

For reference, KPop Demon Hunters actually earned over one million additional views when compared to last week’s figure, which came in at 24.2 million views. Meanwhile, other recent Netflix releases, like The Old Guard 2 and Madea’s Destination Wedding, have seen decreased viewership with each subsequent week.

Our Take On KPop Demon Hunters’ Success

It’s So Exciting To See

KPop Demon Hunters‘ success is unprecedented and, honestly, a breath of fresh air. In addition to the glowing reviews and growing viewership numbers, the various songs from the KPop Demon Hunters soundtrack have broken records on the charts, and Netflix will stage an awards campaign for the movie and the song “Golden.”

Based on the premise alone, many could’ve easily written this off as a silly movie for a niche audience. Instead, its unique story, catchy songs, and vibrant animation are winning over viewers of all ages. It’s truly exciting to see an original movie take off like this at a time when Hollywood mostly relies on the same franchises.

Based on these figures, it seems very likely that Netflix will greenlight a KPop Demon Hunters sequel, something directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans have expressed interest in exploring. It will be interesting to see how long the movie continues to maintain this momentum, and if another movie will ever manage to take its crown.
