“The Potential Is Clear”: Marvel Boss Kevin Feige Teases Mephisto’s MCU Future & Addresses Thanos Connections

Mephisto’s future with the Marvel Cinematic Universe gets addressed by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige. After an endless amount of speculation, the MCU timeline finally brought one of Marvel Comics’ most powerful villains to life in 2025, with the arrival of Mephisto in the Ironheart TV show during episode 6.

Portrayed by Sasha Baron Cohen, who brought the famous supervillain into the franchise, the MCU has just scratched the surface with Mephisto after only a single episode of television. With Mephisto being in the MCU, the natural question is what is next for him after his Ironheart debut, especially after his deal with Riri Williams.

As Mephisto’s future with the MCU has just started, GamesRadar was recently part of a press conference where Feige finally spoke more about Cohen’s character. Kevin Feige responded with a straightforward “yes” when asked if there were plans to use the character more in the future, and delved into the villain’s past and present, sharing the following:

Kevin Feige: He was never part of WandaVision. We’ve talked about that. Matt’s talked about that. Jac Schaefer’s talk about that. He was never part of WandaVision. But the enthusiasm with which he was theorized on that was certainly cool and fun to watch. And he’s another character that, pre-MCU, would have been hard to do. He’s a devil. How do you do that character? But he’s a formative character. He was a big part of Thanos’ storyline in the comics. So again, now that he’s here, the potential is clear.

While 2025 marked the year for Mephisto’s MCU debut, Cohen is not the first actor to portray him in live-action. Mephisto previously appeared in 2007’s Ghost Rider and 2011’s Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, played by Peter Fonda and Ciarán Hinds, respectively.

What Kevin Feige’s Mephisto Comments Mean For The MCU

When it comes to Feige debunking that Mephisto was ever going to be in WandaVision, it makes perfect sense that the Marvel devil didn’t get used as early as Phase 4. The MCU was just getting started with its Disney+ shows after The Infinity Saga, and bringing in Mephisto so fast would have been premature.

Having characters like Death and Mephisto show up later in The Multiverse Saga in Agatha All Along and Ironheart was way more organic than forcing either one of them into Scarlet Witch and Vision’s spinoff series. With the magical concept explored in Ironheart, Mephisto was allowed to have a natural introduction in the MCU.

Given Feige’s tease about Cohen coming back, it wouldn’t be shocking if the MCU uses Mephisto at least one more time in Phase 6. Whether it is Mephisto resurrecting Scarlet Witch or making a deal with another major MCU player remains to be seen, but as Feige said, “the potential is clear.”

Our Take On Kevin Feige’s Mephisto Comments

Mephisto points at something in Ironheart

Hearing Feige finally share more about Mephisto’s journey with the MCU opens the door for so many possible scenarios, especially as there is so much they can do with him within the franchise. With only a few projects slated for Phase 6, it seems possible for Mephisto to be in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, or even one of the next Avengers movies.

It’s also possible that Mephisto may have an even more crucial role in the MCU after The Multiverse Saga, as there could be more fitting places for him in Phase 7 and beyond. But, following Feige’s comments, time will tell what is next for Mephisto in the MCU.
