“I Cried No Less Than Three Times”: Previous Superman Actor Reviews The 2025 DCU Movie

A former Superman actor gives his review of James Gunn’s DC Universe Superman movie. Following a long absence from the big screen, the Man of Steel is finally back in his own film franchise, as the Superman movie from DC Studios opened earlier this month, bringing the DCU timeline to a tremendous start.

With David Corenswet becoming the DCU’s Superman, he joins a long list of actors to have portrayed the Man of Tomorrow in live-action across the big and small screens. As Superman continues its theatrical run, a star who previously played Krypton’s last son has chimed in with his review of Gunn’s DCU film.

In a recent interview with Variety, Brandon Routh, who played the DC icon in 2006’s Superman Returns, was asked about his thoughts on the 2025 reboot. Routh, who also went on to play Ray Palmer, a.k.a. The Atom, in The CW’s Arrowverse franchise, had nothing but praise for the new Superman film, as he shared the following:

Brandon Routh: It was a lot of fun. I really enjoyed it. I think David [Corenswet] is fantastic. I cried no less than three times. I see this in a different way. I come at it from a different perspective. I really got into it as I’m watching him navigate those tricky Superman moments in the first conversation with Lois and Clark in the apartment. And then all of the family stuff for me really hit. It’s a big movie. There’s a lot in there. I have to go see it again. I really am excited for the potential for the DC Universe. A successful launch with this is just good for everybody who wants more of what DC has to offer. There are a lot of great properties that can be explored.

While his time as Superman was short, Routh did get to reprise his version of Clark Kent in the Arrowverse crossover Crisis on Infinite Earths. Ironically enough, Routh’s Superman sported the Kingdom Come version of the Superman logo, which is now what Corenswet’s version utilizes in the DCU.

What Brandon Routh’s Superman Review Means

Corenswet’s film has been resonating with fans and critics alike, which goes to show that Gunn’s work with the Superman movie has really paid off for the DCU. Seeing support from a previous Man of Steel like Routh, who has always been vocal and supportive about Superman and the DC brand in general, speaks volumes, too.

This should also make it all the more fascinating to hear what other Superman actors think about the 2025 reboot, as well as stars who have previously played other key figures in the Superman franchise. Given Routh’s comments about the DCU having tremendous potential, it would genuinely be fun to see him tapped for a new role down the line.

Our Take On Brandon Routh’s Superman Review

Brandon Routh as Superman in Arrowverse Crisis of Infinite Earths looking serious

Routh’s Superman review showcases just how big of an impact Gunn’s film is currently having on those who see it, and also how much this character is genuinely needed on the big screen right now. This will hopefully be the case for other characters that will get to come to life in the DCU.

After the Superman post-credits scenes, it remains to be seen where Corenswet will be seen next in the DCU. However, following the big success of Superman, fans are likely not going to have to wait for too long to see the DCU’s beloved hero.
