Sense and Sensibility has now added additional cast members. The upcoming movie is based on the classic novel by Jane Austen. As with the author’s other works, this book has been adapted multiple times. In this case, it is the 1995 film version that is by far the best known.
Now, a new version of Sense and Sensibility is in production. This subsтιтutes former director Ang Lee for Georgia Oakley, a relative newcomer. It was previously announced that Daisy Edgar-Jones and Esmé Creed-Miles would be portraying the lead roles of Elinor and Marianne Dashwood, respectively.
As per Focus Features, the Sense and Sensibility movie has now added more cast members. The new additions are Caitríona Balfe, Frank Dillane, George McKay, Herbert Nordrum, Bodhi Rae Breathnach, and Fiona Shaw.

This casting includes the love interests for both Elinor and Marianne. McKay will play Edward Ferrars, whom Elinor admires, and Dillane takes on John Willoughby, who Marianne is initially infatuated with. Nordrum plays Colonel Brandon, another admirer of Marianne’s.
As for the other cast members, Balfe will play Mrs. Dashwood, Breathnach is Margaret Dashwood, and Shaw will portray Mrs. Jennings.
What This Means For Sense And Sensibility
The Team Is A Mix Of Old And New Voices
The Sense and Sensibility team opted to include actors from a wide range of experience levels. Roughly half of these new cast members have some level of significant name recognition. This includes McKay, who is known for his work in 1917. Shaw is recognizable from her Harry Potter days, as well as her more recent roles in Bad Sisters season 2 and Andor.
Fiona Shaw also previously starred in the 1995 adaptation of Jane Austen’s Persuasion.
Balfe is a well-regarded actor in Ireland. She more recently played a role in the Rami Malek thriller The Amateur, but more prominently has played Claire Fraser in Outlander.
The Sense and Sensibility team pairs these better-known actors with lesser-known names like Nordrum and Breathnach. Nordrum has some international pull through his work on The Worst Person in the World, whereas Breathnach is far newer to the scene.
Our Take On The Sense And Sensibility Casting News
So Far, There Are No Cast Members From The 1995 Film
While these are some exciting additions to Oakley’s version of Austen’s classic novel, the casting so far has stood apart from Lee’s version. There have been previous ideas circulating about bringing back either Kate Winslet or Emma Thompson for roles in the new Sense and Sensibility.
While it is still possible to bring back Thompson, Winslet, or even Hugh Grant, those chances are diminishing as the cast gets more rounded out. In some ways, this could end up being a better decision, as it will allow the new Sense and Sensibility to be entirely its own thing. Still, this is slightly disappointing for those who love the ’90s film and wish the modern version could pay homage to it.
