It seems like Johnny Cage will be the main character in Mortal Kombat II, but he might also be the weakest. After the first movie primarily followed Cole Young, which upset many fans since he is not a character from the video games, the trailer for Mortal Kombat II makes it clear that Johnny Cage will be the main protagonist.
In the trailer, it is established that Johnny Cage is a washed-up action star who gets recruited by Raiden and Sonya Blade to fight for Earthrealm in the Mortal Kombat tournament. However, unlike Earthrealm’s other champions and Outworld’s fighters, it doesn’t seem like Johnny Cage will have powers in the upcoming Mortal Kombat II.
In addition to Johnny Cage, there will be many other new characters in Mortal Kombat II, such as Kitana, Jade, Baraka, and Shao Kahn. All of these characters will be very powerful, so the former Hollywood actor may struggle against them in the sequel. However, it’s possible that Johnny Cage will end up unlocking his powers in Mortal Kombat II.
Mortal Kombat 2’s Trailer Says Johnny Cage Doesn’t Have Any Powers
Johnny Cage Is Earthrealm’s Newest Recruit
The first movie, which was released in 2021, established that none of Earthrealm’s champions were born with their powers. Instead, characters like Cole Young, Sonya Blade, and Jax Briggs were recruited to fight for Earthrealm because they have a dragon mark. Because of their dragon marks, all of these characters were able to unlock their arcanas.
Therefore, heading into the tournament in Mortal Kombat II, Earthrealm’s champions from the first movie will all have special powers that will help them while they fight Outworld’s warriors. However, based on the first official trailer for the movie, it doesn’t seem like Johnny Cage will have powers in Mortal Kombat II.
In the trailer, Johnny Cage himself emphasizes the fact that he has no powers. While speaking with Sonya, he states that he doesn’t have “transformer arms” and can’t “shoot lightning bolts.” Because of this, he wants nothing to do with the Mortal Kombat tournament. However, it’s obvious that he will end up sticking around and fighting for Earthrealm in the sequel.
In a fight that is featured later in the trailer, Kano also points out that Johnny Cage doesn’t have any powers. The former Hollywood star acknowledges this and humorously states that he’s just “incredibly handsome.” Despite his lack of powers, Johnny Cage seems to be holding his own in his fight against Kano and Noob Saibot, which is only briefly shown in the trailer.
In Mortal Kombat II, Johnny Cage will have to rely on his previous martial arts training to stand a chance in the tournament.
Based on the trailer, it also seems like Johnny Cage holds his own against Baraka, who is arguably one of the most dangerous Outworld fighters. Therefore, even though he seemingly doesn’t have any special powers, Johnny Cage is definitely a skilled fighter. In Mortal Kombat II, Johnny Cage will have to rely on his previous martial arts training to stand a chance in the tournament.
While Johnny Cage will not have powers for most of the movie, it’s possible that he will eventually unlock his arcana. Perhaps he does have a dragon mark that is not shown in the trailer, or perhaps he will kill a fighter in the sequel and inherit their mark, just like Sonya did with Kano in the first movie. Johnny Cage does have powers in the video games, so this wouldn’t be entirely surprising.
Johnny Cage’s Powers In Mortal Kombat Games Explained
Johnny Cage Is Very Powerful In The Video Games
Even though Johnny Cage is a human in the video game series, it has been explained why he has special powers. In 2011’s Mortal Kombat 9, it was revealed that Johnny Cage is a descendant of a Mediterranean war cult which protected and served the gods. To achieve this purpose, the warriors in this cult all had special powers.
This explains why Johnny Cage can handle fighting some of the most powerful characters in the Mortal Kombat franchise. In the games, Johnny Cage can increase the power of his attacks, which can visually be seen by a green burst of energy that emits from his body. Additionally, Johnny Cage can launch blasts of energy which can hurt his opponents.
In 2015’s Mortal Kombat X, it is also revealed that Johnny Cage can use this energy to shield his own body. This actually allows him to easily survive what could have been a ᴅᴇᴀᴅly blow from Shinnok, one of the strongest villains in the Mortal Kombat franchise. Therefore, he could stand a chance against another powerful villain like Shao Kahn in Mortal Kombat II.
Even though the first trailer for Mortal Kombat II makes it seem like Johnny Cage is one of the movie franchise’s weakest characters, he could eventually obtain the powers that he has in the video games. Cole, Sonya, and Jax didn’t unlock their arcanas immediately in the first movie, which means it could take some time for Johnny Cage to finally obtain some special powers in Mortal Kombat II.
