Avengers: Doomsday Writer Addresses Going From Working On Avengers 5 To Doom-Led MCU Movie

One of Avengers: Doomsday‘s writers comments on working on different iterations of the Marvel Cinematic Universe movie. Originally, the MCU’s next Avengers movie would have focused on Jonathan Majors’ Kang the Conqueror and/or the multiversal Council of Kangs, which also featured Kang variants played by the actor. However, after Marvel fired Majors, the movie was completely overhauled.

Kang and Avengers: The Kang Dynasty are now gone, with Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom leading Avengers: Doomsday‘s expansive cast. In 2023, original writer Jeff Loveness was replaced by Loki creator Michael Waldron, who was already set to pen the Multiverse Saga’s finale, Avengers: Secret Wars. It seemed like Waldron had since left for Stephen McFeely to take over, but he remains.

Speaking with ScreenRant‘s own Liam Crowley at the 2025 Disney Upfronts in May, Michael Waldron revealed that he is still attached to Avengers: Doomsday and commented on how filming is shaping up so far. While the creator of Disney+’s Loki noted that he could not go into detail about the Kang to Doom change, Waldron claimed that Avengers: Doomsday production has been “a blast.”

Check out the full exchange below:

ScreenRant: Sticking with the Disney family, I know you once were tapped to write Avengers 5. You exited the project before it was reтιтled to Doomsday. Did you ever draft a script with Doom, or was it always just Kang?

Michael Waldron: Well, you know, I can’t really go into all the details there, but I’ve been back and forth from London with those guys. And I’m still working on that thing with them now.

ScreenRant: Oh? So you’re still a writer on Doomsday?

Michael Waldron: Yeah. Yeah.

ScreenRant: Oh, amazing. I know production is going on right now. Has it been a success?

Michael Waldron: We’re having a blast.

What Michael Waldron’s Comments Mean For Avengers: Doomsday

The MCU Movie Should Focus Heavily On The Multiverse

Michael Waldron’s comments are certainly interesting. When the Russo Brothers were tapped to direct the next two Avengers movies, it was revealed that Stephen McFeely, one of the writers of their MCU movies, would be back to pen both Avengers entries. There was no mention of Waldron at the time, so the ᴀssumption was that he was no longer attached.

However, Waldron confirmed that he remains a writer on Avengers: Doomsday, even commenting on how he has “been back and forth from London,” where the MCU’s next Avengers movie is filming. As such, it seems like the writer very much continues to be active in the process of developing Avengers: Doomsday‘s story, which makes a lot of sense.

After all, Waldron was the creator of Disney+’s Loki, which is one of the most important projects in the MCU’s Multiverse Saga. Loki set up many elements of the franchise’s take on the multiverse for the upcoming Avengers movies to explore. Additionally, Tom Hiddleston’s Loki will return in Avengers: Doomsday, so Waldron remaining attached to the film is fitting.

What Michael Waldron’s Comments Mean For Avengers: Doomsday

Loki Could Be A Major Player In The MCU Movie

I’m excited about Michael Waldron still being a writer on Avengers: Doomsday. While the Scarlet Witch’s villain turn in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was a controversial move, I’m a fan of what Waldron has done with the MCU’s multiverse. He understands how to make it exciting and can help the Avengers movies live up to expectations.

Having Waldron’s creative output can also help Loki’s arc in Avengers: Doomsday. After Disney+’s Loki perfectly set up the character for a major MCU role in the movie, I hope to see that pay off as Doctor Doom likely confronts him for multiversal control. Waldron can make that feel as big as it should in Avengers: Doomsday.
