He’ll Star Opposite An Oscar Winner And A Three-Time Oscar Nominee

Although Farrell has not had any major projects in the first half of 2025, he has two movies coming before the end of the year. The first is A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, which was directed by Kogonada (who previously directed Farrell in After Yang) and also features Barbie star and three-time Oscar nominee Margot Robbie.

The movie, which co-stars Kevin Kline and Phoebe Waller-Bridge and is set to premiere on September 19, follows a pair of strangers who embark on a fantastical journey that brings them closer than they could have ever imagined.

Farrell’s second feature of 2025, which is set to premiere on Netflix on October 29 after a limited theatrical release on October 15, is The Ballad of a Small Player. Directed by Edward Berger (Conclave) and written by Rowan Joffé (28 Weeks Later), the movie follows a gambler who starts a new life in Macau.

The Ballad of a Small Player cast also includes Fala Chen (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings), Deannie Yip (Our Time Will Come), Alex Jennings (The Phoenician Scheme), and Oscar winner Tilda Swinton (Michael Clayton).

He Is Nominated For The Penguin

In addition to being the star of two movies in the remainder of 2025, that span of time could also see him win his first Emmy. The 2025 Emmy nominations saw him earn a nod for his performance in the тιтle role of HBO’s The Penguin, which is a spinoff of the 2022 superhero movie The Batman.

This marks the first Emmy nomination for Colin Farrell. Although the Penguin star is up against some strong compeтιтion, the show is a favorite to win, having earned 24 nominations overall. If Farrell wins an Emmy on September 14, it will be the cherry on top of an already packed year for the actor.
