F1 The Movie Box Office Hits A Rare Brad Pitt Milestone In Just One Month

F1 The Movie has continued to race up the charts, hitting a major box office milestone. The movie, which was directed by Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick), follows retired Formula One driver Sonny Hayes (Brad Pitt) returning to the racetrack many years after being sidelined by an injury.

The F1 The Movie release kicked off on June 27, becoming the first PG-13 movie to take No. 1 in the summer of 2025 and quickly going on to surpᴀss Napoleon and Killers of the Flower Moon to become Apple Studios’ highest-grossing theatrical release ever.

Per The Numbers, F1 The Movie has now hit a cumulative domestic total of $144 million and an international gross of $257.2 million. This brings its global box office haul to $401.2 million, making it just the eighth movie of 2024 to pᴀss the $400 million milestone worldwide.

Additionally, it is only the sixth Brad Pitt movie to ever pᴀss that milestone, behind Ocean’s Eleven, Troy, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, World War Z, and ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool 2. Because he only had a cameo in ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool 2, this means that F1 The Movie is the fifth highest-grossing movie with Brad Pitt in the lead.

What This Means For F1 The Movie

It’s An Unusual Success For An Original Screenplay

In addition to the F1 The Movie box office being a major achievement for Brad Pitt himself, it’s an even more incredible success for an original screenplay. Previously in 2025, Ryan Coogler’s smash hit horror movie Sinners had become the highest-grossing live-action original movie in the English movie of the 2020s.

F1 The Movie was written by Top Gun: Maverick‘s Ehren Kruger.

However, Sinners only grossed $365.8 million worldwide, meaning that F1 The Movie has raced past it to push that record for the decade even further. The only other English-language movie ahead of it is the animated Pixar movie Elemental, which debuted in 2023 and earned $484.8 million worldwide.

Our Take On The F1 The Movie Milestone

It It Really A Win For Original Movies?

While this is an astounding result for an original movie, it’s important to note that F1 The Movie may not be part of a pre-existing film franchise, it’s still an IP project. Much like Barbie in 2023, the Brad Pitt movie is an original blockbuster that is nevertheless set around a popular brand, in this case Formula One itself.

Ultimately, it remains to be seen if the success of F1 The Movie is a success for original storytelling. However, with both it and Sinners thriving in 2025, if other upcoming original movies such as Weapons, Him, or Marty Supreme find success, this would mean that the success of originals is actually a measurable trend this year.
