New movies from Christopher Nolan have become cinematic events no matter the subject over the years. After becoming a mainstream name through his Batman trilogy, everything from his boldly original sci-fi movies to time-crunching war movies and epic biopics has connected with audiences. That’s why his movies have made over $6 billion at the box office as a director.
The success that often comes with Christopher Nolan’s movies is not luck. Its the byproduct of how much audiences have come to trust him and know that whatever he’s putting his time and effort behind is going to be special. Establishing that with the Dark Knight movies was imperative to future success, but it’s more impressive that he’s carried that momentum on without DC.
Any questions about Nolan’s standing were firmly put to rest with Oppenheimer‘s release in 2023. The 3-hour-long biopic about J. Robert Oppenheimer and the invention of the atomic bomb utilized Nolan’s name recognition, an all-star cast, and more to become a true sensation. Oppenheimer made $975 million at the worldwide box office and won Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director.
That’s heightened curiosity even more to what Nolan is doing next. It’s understandable if you’re already counting down the days until you’re sitting in a theater preparing to watch a new Christopher Nolan film. Even if you’re not, we’ve now reached a major milestone.
The Odyssey Releases In Theaters 1 Year From Today
And Tickets Are Already On Sale
In case you weren’t aware, Christopher Nolan is already underway on making his next movie after Oppenheimer, which is an adaptation of Homer’s The Odyssey. The bold swing to tackle this iconic source material was confirmed to be the director’s next project in December 2024. This came with confirmation that The Odyssey will release in theaters on July 17, 2025 – which is exactly one year from today.
The movie started filming earlier this year and is still in the midst of production as Nolan films the entire thing with IMAX cameras. The cast is headlined by Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, and Tom Holland, but it also features notable stars like Charlize Theron, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, Mia Goth, Elliot Page, and Jon Bernthal.
Although the movie is still one full year away from coming out, The Odyssey tickets are already on sale for select IMAX 70mm showings. After the interest in that format for Oppenheimer, Nolan and Universal are working with theaters to capitalize on the early excitement for the 2026 film by locking down IMAX showtimes so far in advance.
With The Odyssey‘s teaser trailer also already out and playing in theaters, there is a lot of publicity for the film. Interest should only continue to pick up from here, especially once the trailer debuts online and the general awareness of the film increases.
A year may still feel like a long time to wait to see The Odyssey, but getting past this point is still a huge milestone. Now it’s just up to Christopher Nolan to fully deliver on all the hype that is already mounting for what could be his magnum opus.
