Empyrean Author’s Favorite Romance Book Is Developing Into A Movie With Oscar-Winning Producer

An Oscar-nominated producer is developing a big-screen adaptation of a book from the Fourth Wing‘s author, Rebecca Yarros. Best known for penning the Empyrean series, two of Yarros’ bestselling novels are currently in the pipeline to be adapted for the small screen. The Fourth Wing TV series is in the works at Amazon MGM, while In the Likely Event is being adapted into a movie at Netflix.

Now, Todd Lieberman (The Housemaid, War Machine) is developing a movie adaptation of The Things We Leave Unfinished, per Lionsgate’s press release.

With a screenplay by Arash Amel (The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare), who also executive produces alongside Yarros through her production company Full Measures Production and Alex Young on behalf of Lieberman’s production company Hidden Pictures, the movie centers around a decades-old family secret. Check out the logline below:

After a public divorce, a woman returns home and reluctantly works with a bestselling author to finish her late great-grandmother’s WWII love story—only to uncover secrets that challenge the past and expose romances of the past and present.

What This Means For The Things We Leave Unfinished

The Things We Leave Unfinished Tells An Epic Story About Love And Heroism

The Things We Leave Unfinished is one of Yarros’ most popular books, and it’s also the author’s favorite. In the same press release, the novelist described the project as a “very special story” that she’s excited to bring to the big screen with Amel, who echoed her sentiment, admitting that he was “swept away” by the “epic romance, cinematic scope, and emotional depth” that Yarros created.

From a shared vision, the movie adaptation of The Things We Leave Unfinished found its producer in Lieberman, who Amel described as “a natural creative alignment” for bringing the story of love and heroism to the big screen.

In addition to having the dream creative team where everyone is on board, the upcoming book-to-movie adaptation has also found the perfect home at Lionsgate. The company has a longstanding history of successful adaptations, including The Hunger Games film series, The Godfather trilogy, and To Kill a Mockingbird.

While the тιтle currently doesn’t have a date attached to it, The Things We Leave Unfinished will join highly anticipated тιтles, such as The Housemaid, as part of the company’s upcoming slate.

Our Take On The Things We Leave Unfinished

The Things We Leave Unfinished Is Coming To The Big Screen

The Things We Leave Unfinished is the author’s third adaptation in the pipeline, but like the other two projects, it’s unclear when audiences will be able to watch the movie in theaters. Fourth Wing was announced in 2023, while In the Likely Event was announced last year. With the three тιтles in various stages of production at different studios, they’ll likely come out over the next few years.

The Lionsgate adaptation will differentiate from Yarros’ Netflix movie and Amazon TV series in scope. With the creative team aiming to capture the epicness of the story, The Things We Leave Unfinished is adapted specifically for the big screen instead of being made as a straight-to-streaming movie. This means the project will be the author’s first to receive a theatrical release.
