Those who believe that A24 can do no wrong are sure to be excited by the news that the indie production company is financing another up-and-coming filmmaker to make a unique fantasy film. A24, the company behind Everything Everywhere All at Once, Moonlight, Lady Bird, and many more, has delivered plenty of genre-bending surprise hits that are now cultural touchstones.
While A24’s best movies are plenty evidence to be on the lookout for whatever they are doing next, writer-director David Mikalson is virtually unheard of. Mikalson dropped out of film school and produced a few short films, but could be Hollywood’s next breakout filmmaker. Fans of two particular classic movies will want to check out this new one in development at A24.
A24 Developing The Goblin With Writer-Director David Mikalson
A24 Is Making A Wild New Movie About Friendship
David Mikalson’s script for The Goblin reportedly garnered much interest in Hollywood, but seemingly more in the vein that studios and producers were looking to see how it turned out without investing anything. Mikalson himself was working on a self-produced version of it with a minuscule budget when A24 stepped in.
Per ᴅᴇᴀᴅline, A24 has now signed on Mikalson to produce a feature-length, bigger-budget iteration of his original The Goblin, which is described as “a ranuchy comedy” where “Ted meets E.T.“ Currently, no further details have been confirmed about the story, cast, or crew of this upcoming picture, but the premise alone has prompted the industry;s interest.
ᴅᴇᴀᴅline reports that the script gained attention after Mikalson “hatched the idea to make an outrageous buddy comedy about a goblin, using a practical puppet and operating outside the Hollywood system.” Based on its inspirations, this sounds to be an interesting take on the “befriending a lone alien” subgenre, leaning into the comedy style of Ted.
What The Goblin Means For A24 & David Mikalson
A24 Will Keep Producing Knockout Hits & May Launch Mikalson’s Career
A24 deals in outrageous ideas — Everything Everywhere All at Once, Ex Machina, Midsommar, and plenty of others all sound very strange on paper, but those who may have doubted it were proven wrong by clever scripts and spectacular performances. I say, when it comes to A24 productions, the weirder, the better.
The Goblin sounds very ambitious in terms of genre, blending mature comedy with the inherently innocent tone of E.T. It’s also not clear if the plans to use a practical puppet to bring to life the тιтular character have remained intact with the movie being funded by A24, but it’s something I would hope for.
When it comes to A24 productions, the weirder, the better.
Everyone likes a good underdog story, and we should all want to see more upstart filmmakers succeed in Hollywood, so I am looking forward to the A24 project of The Goblin and hoping for something mind-blowing.
