F1 Is Incredible, But These 2025 Sports Movies Could Be Even Better

F1 The Movie has been one of the most successful films of 2025 so far, and proves that general audiences and critics still love watching sports movies. Reviews for F1 The Movie have been great, with Screen Rant’s own Mae Abdulbaki giving it a score of 8 out of 10, but the film has also been a major box office hit.

As of this writing, F1 The Movie has grossed $395 million globally (via Box Office Mojo), becoming one of the highest-earning movies of Brad Pitt’s career. Because of its combination of critical and commercial success, there’s even a chance that F1 The Movie could be nominated for Best Picture at the 2026 Academy Awards.

Joseph Kosinski’s previous film, Top Gun: Maverick, landed a Best Picture nomination, so it seems like F1 The Movie has a chance. However, there are several other sports movies coming out this year which could potentially overshadow the adrenaline-fueled racing film. For example, Him, The Smashing Machine, and Marty Supreme could all potentially be better than F1 The Movie.

Him, The Smashing Machine, & Marty Supreme Are Additional Sports Movies Coming Out In 2025

2025 Is Full Of Exciting Sports Movies

These three films, in addition to F1 The Movie, prove that 2025 could end up being one of the most successful years for sports films in history. Out of this group, Him is definitely the most unconventional sports movie since it will also tackle the horror genre. The upcoming football movie will follow a quarterback who takes an up-and-coming rookie under his wing and shows him the dark side of fame and power.

The trailer for Him, which will star Marlon Wayans, Tyriq Withers, and Julia Fox, teases that the movie will include plenty of horrifying sequences. The movie will be directed by Justin Tipping and is produced by Jordan Peele, who has become a master of the horror genre in recent years. Therefore, it’s clear that Him will be a truly unique sports movie.

Not long after Him hits theaters, The Smashing Machine will be released and will be a more traditional biographical sports drama. Since many of the world’s most accomplished athletes have stories worth telling on the big screen, these kinds of sports movies are very common. However, The Smashing Machine could stand out in this subgenre since it is directed by acclaimed filmmaker Benny Safdie.

The Smashing Machine will star Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt and will tell the story of former MMA fighter Mark Kerr as he balances his fighting career and his personal struggles. Johnson is obviously a huge star, but it’s clear that The Smashing Machine will be the most unique movie of his career. Many even think Dwayne Johnson will be nominated for an Oscar for his performance in the film, which means it will be worth a watch.

Finally, with its December 25, 2025 release date, Marty Supreme will be the sports movie that closes out the year. Interestingly, Marty Supreme will be directed by Josh Safdie, Benny Safdie’s brother. While the brothers worked together on acclaimed films like Good Time and Uncut Gems, they directed their two upcoming sports movies separately.

Just like The Smashing Machine, Marty Supreme is inspired by a real athlete, this being ping pong champion Marty Reisman. However, instead of being a straightforward biopic, the movie will simply be inspired by Reisman’s life. The movie will star Timothée Chalamet, who has quickly risen as one of Hollywood’s top stars in recent years, and Gwyneth Paltrow. With this cast and Josh Safdie behind the camera, it’s a safe bet that Marty Supreme will be an incredible film.

If Him, The Smashing Machine, & Marty Supreme Are Great, 2025 Will Be An Amazing Year For Sports Movies

More Sports Movies Could Be Made After This Year

It’s also worth noting that Happy Gilmore 2 will be another popular sports movie releasing this year. However, while it will definitely be a major hit on Netflix, the Adam Sandler-led movie, which is the long-awaited sequel to the 1996 comedy classic, probably won’t be a critical success.

When it comes to critical success and awards potential, F1 The Movie, Him, The Smashing Machine, and Marty Supreme will clearly be the four standout sports films of 2025. Since F1 The Movie will be a standout summer blockbuster this year, there’s a strong chance it will be nominated for several awards. At the Oscars and other award shows, it’s possible that both The Smashing Machine and Marty Supreme will join F1 The Movie in multiple categories.

2025 could be remembered as a major comeback year for the sports genre.

It would be very interesting if The Smashing Machine and Marty Supreme are nominated for the same awards, since this would mean Josh and Benny Safdie would be competing against each other. Since the top award shows typically don’t recognize the horror genre, there’s a chance that Him will be overlooked. However, even if Him isn’t up for as many awards as the other films in this group, it’s still obvious that 2025 will be great for sports movies.

In fact, 2025 could be remembered as a major comeback year for the sports genre. In the last few decades of the 1900s and even in the early 2000s, sports movies thrived at the box office. However, recently, far fewer sports films have been made, which is a shame. Other than blockbusters like the Creed movies and critical darlings like 2019’s Ford v Ferrari, there haven’t been many standout sports films in recent years.

The lack of notable sports movies in recent years proves why upcoming movies like Him, The Smashing Machine, and Marty Supreme are so exciting. Hopefully after this year, Hollywood will once again recognize that audiences want new sports movies. The success of these films isn’t guaranteed, but F1 The Movie has already gotten 2025 off to a great start to be a memorable year for sports movies.
