While it might have once seemed like The Conjuring franchise would never end, the arrival of The Conjuring: Last Rites will mark the final entry into the original series. The Conjuring universe’s timeline is hard to keep track of, primarily because there are so many movies in the ever-expanding series.
Beginning in 2013 with one of director James Wan’s best movies, The Conjuring, the franchise soon followed up this blockbuster horror hit with its first spinoff. 2014’s Annabelle told the story of the possessed doll glimpsed at the beginning of The Conjuring and, in the process, established the franchise’s penchant for expanding its cinematic world.
2016’s The Conjuring brought back Wan, while 2016 saw the release of the Annabelle prequel, Annabelle: Creation. 2018 brought with it the arrival of director Corin Hardy’s The Nun, which was followed in 2023 by The Nun II. Before that, Annabelle’s sequel, Annabelle Comes Home, arrived in 2019, and The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It was released in 2021.
The Conjuring: Last Rites Is The Final Movie In The Franchise, For Now
The Conjuring Franchise Could Continue Thanks To Various Spinoffs
After all of these interlinked outings, it is no surprise that a lot of readers might ᴀssume The Conjuring’s horror universe will continue to expand forever. However, The Conjuring: Last Rites will be the last movie in the main franchise with the Warrens, even if the franchise is expected to continue after its release in some capacity.

Real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren are the main characters of The Conjuring movies, and the duo also appear in Annabelle Comes Home in a supporting role. Played by Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson, the Warrens spend each movie investigating a supposed haunting and exorcizing the demons or spirits inhabiting the home.
The sequel will be the last movie in the franchise to include Wilson and Farmiga as its main characters.
The true story of The Conjuring: Last Rites will likely diverge significantly from the plot of the movie, if the earlier outings of the franchise are anything to go by. However, regardless of how much the franchise’s next outing twists the truth of its real-life inspiration, the sequel will be the last movie in the franchise to include Wilson and Farmiga as its main characters.
Not only are The Nun and Annabelle franchises likely to continue, but there are further potential projects that could be spun off from the series. Most famously, The Crooked Man from The Conjuring 2 was long rumored to have a spinoff of his own on the way, and Wan told Entertainment Weekly he still wanted to make the movie as recently as May 2025.
As such, fans of the franchise need not fret too much just yet. Even if The Conjuring: Last Rites is the last time viewers see Ed and Lorraine Warren in a starring role, The Conjuring universe will never be far from cinema screens.
