How To Train Your Dragon Becomes Only The 5th 2025 Movie To Hit Huge Box Office Milestone

The How To Train Your Dragon remake just burned through a major box office milestone. A remake of the 2010 animated classic, the live-action remake stars Mason Thames (Hiccup) and Nico Parker (Astrid), alongside the lovable CGI dragon Toothless. As they discover the truth about the war between dragons and Vikings, audiences have been pouring into theaters.

While Superman dominated the box office this week, a report from Variety indicates that it is not this weekend’s only winner. How to Train Your Dragon took fourth place and crossed a mᴀssive global total. It has officially earned $239 million domestically and $560 million worldwide, having crossed the $550 million mark this weekend.

It is only the fifth movie of the year to reach that milestone, as only Ne Zha 2, Lilo & Sтιтch, A Minecraft Movie, and Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning reached it sooner. Ne Zha 2 finished its run with nearly $1.9 billion, while second and third place finished just under $1 billion. Mission: Impossible, meanwhile, earned $580 million overall.

What This Means For How To Train Your Dragon

A Sequel Is Already On The Way

With $560 million against a $150 million budget, the How To Train Your Dragon remake is already profitable. Given that Dreamworks elected to greenlight a sequel before its release, this should be a mᴀssive relief for the studio. Live-action remakes are not always successful, as Disney’s Snow White proved, but this remake is already an accomplishment.

This does not, however, mean that this is the highest-grossing How To Train Your Dragon movie. While ahead of the original and the third movie, it still sits behind How To Train Your Dragon 2, which earned a stunning $622 million, thanks to its international draw. Check out the chart below, which showcases each release’s domestic and worldwide totals.

When accounting for inflation, unfortunately, the total is fairly disappointing, as it would not surpᴀss a single previous franchise release. Still, in a box office environment that has been stymied by the ever-increasing influence of streaming platforms, it is respectable enough to achieve a $560 million total, and Dreamworks should be proud of its accomplishment.

Our Take On How To Train Your Dragon’s Milestone

This Is A Well-Deserved Milestone

If any live-action remake was to achieve success, it certainly deserves to be this one. ScreenRant‘s Sarah Moran reviewed How To Train Your Dragon and called it a “fantastic” movie with truly gorgeous visuals and wonderful performances. It managed to recreate iconic scenes from the original without feeling especially repeтιтive by recreating them in a sH๏τ-for-sH๏τ style.

With limited family-friendly compeтιтion early in its run, this movie managed to draw entire families into theaters, and its success is unlikely to end with its run. After all, it will be heading to streaming soon, where it will entertain audiences for years to come. How To Train Your Dragon is already successful, and it is only continuing to thrive.
