Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for James Gunn’s Superman
James Gunn’s Superman helps set up 2025’s next DCU project in a few different ways. Starring David Corenswet as the тιтular Man of Steel, Superman throws audiences into an established DCU, one that technically began well before its first official live-action movie. As such, there are a few elements in the new DC movie that help set up Peacemaker season 2.
Although James Gunn’s Superman is the first live-action movie in the new DCU, some of the events seen in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker season 1 are still part of the continuity (for the most part). Likewise, the trailer for Peacemaker’s second season does feature some key DCU ties. With that in mind, here’s how Superman sets up Peacemaker season 2.
James Gunn’s Superman Sets Up Peacemaker Season 2 In 3 Big Ways
“Metahumans Make The Rules Now”
The first way Superman sets up Peacemaker season 2 is Rick Flag Sr. Now a US General, Flag was formerly the leader of Task Force M for Amanda Waller and ARGUS, seen in last year’s animated series Creature Commandos (The DCU’s first official project). In Superman, Flag was among the US officials to whom Lex Luthor pitched his task force, though Flag was largely opposed to Luthor’s anti-metahuman proposals.
Rick Flag was also present when Superman turned himself in. Likewise, the ending of Superman sees Flag watching the news as Kal-El takes down Luthor while the Justice Gang stops the Boravian invasion of Jarhanpur as the politician watching next to him makes a somewhat foreboding claim:
“Metahumans are making the rules now…”
Seeing how Rick Flag appears to be the new Director of ARGUS in Peacemaker season 2’s trailer, Flag may be taking metahumans a little more seriously following his experiences in both Creature Commandos and now, Superman.
Additionally, Superman introduces the Justice Gang, who will be in future DCU projects like Peacemaker season 2. Funded by Maxwell Lord, Hawkgirl and Guy Gardner are interviewing John Cena’s Peacemaker alongside the LordTech CEO in Peacemaker season 2’s trailer…before ultimately rejecting him. Combined with the Gang welcoming Metamorpho into their ranks, it seems Justice Gang is looking to expand and recruit new members after Superman (just not Peacemaker).
Lastly, Peacemaker himself cameos in Superman, getting interviewed following Superman’s surprise Krypton origin twist where the full message from Jor-El reveals Kal-El was sent to Earth to conquer. As such, Chris Smith claiming he knows Superman and that the Man of Steel thinks he’s better than everybody else definitely implies that the Peacemaker we’ll see later in 2025 is the same one we had in the first season.
James Gunn’s Superman is now playing in theaters from DC Studios.
