Rumors have been circling about more of KPop Demon Hunters, including those pertaining to a potential director’s cut, but one of the new movie’s directors was confused by this discourse. Since the movie took over Netflix and KPop Demon Hunters’ ending set up a sequel, people have naturally been wondering what is next for the budding franchise.
Rumi (Arden Cho), Mira (May Hong), and Zoey (Ji-young Yoo) have no more secrets after Rumi’s demon heritage was disastrously revealed, but Huntr/x reconciled and saved the world from a demon invasion. KPop Demon Hunters’ reviews reflect how it is a well-paced musical spectacle, but people still ask if there could be more.
During an AMA session on Reddit, KPop Demon Hunters co-director Maggie Kang addressed the director’s cut rumors, definitively shutting this theory down. Kang wasn’t sure where the idea even originated since they “work on one cut of the movie,” while also speaking about the possibility of a DVD release for KPop Demon Hunters. Thank you so much!!!
Hahha… Ok, so I don’t know where the idea of a “Director’s cut” has come from but this isn’t a thing that exists. We work on one cut of the movie, always so the movie you see is what we’ve always intended to make.
Not sure about DVDs, hopefully? But it’s not a q we can answer, sorry!
What No Director’s Cut Means For KPop Demon Hunters
More BTS Sutff Could Have The Same Effect
It makes less sense for an animated movie to have a director’s cut, considering the time it takes to animate additional scenes. The most cost-effective approach and best use of the crew’s time is to have a тιԍнт story throughout the process, so they know exactly where their efforts are going.
Deleted scenes from animated movies that have been revealed in the past are often just sketches of the sequence, as they were cut before time was wasted on the full animation. In short, what we see of KPop Demon Hunters is the directors’ intention, because they always structured the story around what would be reasonable for them to produce.
Yet things like interviews and BTS features may be close to what fans are seeking from a director’s cut, of learning more about the vision behind KPop Demon Hunters and what it took to make it. As Kang and others give more interviews, Netflix may consider releasing a BTS special in the future, which would surely delight fans.
Our Take On A KPop Demon Hunters Director’s Cut
It Speaks To A Simple Truth: People Want More KPop Demon Hunters
It would be fun to see more musical and/or action sequences with Rumi, Zoey, and Mira — which is why we want a KPop Demon Hunters sequel. If there is going to be more of these characters, efforts will likely have to be directed to another movie, with the end point of another successful release and compensation for the animators’ hard work.
In short, I see how a director’s cut wasn’t really feasible for KPop Demon Hunters, but maybe the directors could speak of additional character backstories and interactions that they imagine still happened in this world, just not in the movie. In the meantime, I will get back to waiting for the announcement of a sequel.
