Darth Maul’s New TV Show Is The Perfect Chance To Break This Surprising 26-Year Star Wars Pattern

Maul: Shadow Lord is expected to be released sometime in 2026, and hopefully, the show will break this 26-year-old Star Wars pattern. Since his debut in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, Maul has been a fan-favorite Sith because of his cool design, lightsaber, and the general mystery that has surrounded the character.

Maul was thought ᴅᴇᴀᴅ at the end of The Phantom Menace, but he made a surprising return in the animated Star Wars: The Clone Wars series, where he became a primary antagonist yet again to Obi-Wan Kenobi. Additionally, he became a repeated thorn in Palpatine’s side, and a problem to solve.

Maul has popped up in other Star Wars тιтles throughout the years, namely a cameo in Solo: A Star Wars Story and a featured role in Star Wars Rebels, which saw Maul’s death. Maul’s final arc in Rebels is one of the best in all of Star Wars, portraying what’s largely regarded as one of the best lightsaber duels.

Maul has often been at the center of some of the best lightsaber duels in all of Star Wars, but it’s a bit shocking how low his winning percentage is. Maul is known as a ruthless killer, but that apparently doesn’t mean he’s good in combat.

Darth Maul Has More Defeats To His Name Than Successes

Especially Against Other Force Users

Darth Maul has dueled a lot of Force-sensitive characters, including Ahsoka Tano, Asajj Ventress, Palpatine, and multiple duels against Obi-Wan Kenobi. However, when looking at these duels, very few of them result in Maul’s victory. In fact, the only Jedi Maul has beaten one-on-one is Qui-Gon Jinn, whom Maul killed in The Phantom Menace.

Maul has teamed up with his brother, Savage Opress, multiple times in The Clone Wars, which resulted in some success. In fact, in The Clone Wars season 4 finale, Maul and Savage were able to defeat Obi-Wan Kenobi and capture him. However, Kenobi later teams up with Asajj Ventress, and together they beat Maul and Savage.

Ventress was looking for revenge against Savage Opress, who was meant to kill her former master, Count Dooku, but ultimately double-crossed her.

In Rebels, Maul also teamed up with Ahsoka Tano and Kanan Jarrus against three Imperial Inquisitors, a duel that they won. However, Maul was later single-handedly beaten by a recently blinded Kanan Jarrus.

It’s worth noting that Maul and Savage were also defeated by Palpatine in The Clone Wars season 5 finale. Maul always puts up a good fight, but he is often so concerned with going in for the kill that he forgets he has to beat someone in combat first.

It’s Time To See Darth Maul Deserve His Badᴀss Reputation

Especially Against Force Users

Against non-Force users, Maul is obviously a force to be reckoned with. He’s fast, ruthless, and isn’t afraid to kill anyone who stands in his way. However, that doesn’t translate well to his repeated losses to Force-users. It’s a trend that needs to end.

It’s likely that we’ll see Maul take on some of Darth Vader’s Imperial Inquisitors, and it’d be a great opportunity for the former Sith to show off his skills against a well-trained Force-user.

With Maul: Shadow Lord upcoming, it’s key that the new series shows off how badᴀss Maul is, especially against Force users. It’s likely that we’ll see Maul take on some of Darth Vader’s Imperial Inquisitors, and it’d be a great opportunity for the former Sith to show off his skills against a well-trained Force-user.

Maul has a reputation for being cool and ruthless, and Maul: Shadow Lord is Star Wars’ chance to really put that at the forefront of Maul’s story. We’ve seen him take on groups like Death Watch and win handily, but it’ll be important for Maul to win a well-matched duel.

Maul’s legacy deserves more than easy wins, and this is the perfect time to do it.

The Tragedy Of Shadow Lord Is That We Know Darth Maul’s Fate

We Know Where He’s Going In Rebels

As previously mentioned, Maul dies in a final duel against Obi-Wan Kenobi in Rebels season 3, and we know his final arc revolved around him trying to enact his revenge against the Jedi. However, there is a gap in our knowledge when it comes to Maul during the years of the Empire.

Maul briefly appears in Solo as head of his crime syndicate, Crimson Dawn. We know that Crimson Dawn will be a key part of Maul: Shadow Lord, but plot details are still thin. While there are still things to learn about Maul’s journey, knowing the character’s ultimate fate is pigeonholes what the show will be able to do and show.

Maul: Shadow Lord is going to allow the former Sith the chance to really shine as a character in a way we haven’t seen before. Often, in Star Wars, we see the good guys win their battles. So, with Maul being the focus of the show, we can be hopeful that Maul will win some lightsaber duels.

Having Maul win some lightsaber battles against other Force-users in Maul: Shadow Lord will not only break a 26-year-old trend, but also show the full strength of the character.
