Mortal Kombat 2’s Tournament Already Has A Major Challenge After A Previous MK Movie Decision

Since the first film was quite underwhelming, there is a lot of pressure for Mortal Kombat 2 to appease fans of the franchise. Luckily, the ending of 2021’s Mortal Kombat sets up a great story for the sequel. Firstly, Cole Young sets off to recruit Johnny Cage at the end of the first film.

Since Johnny Cage is one of the most popular characters in the franchise, fans can’t wait to see him in the upcoming Mortal Kombat 2. In addition to Johnny Cage, it has been confirmed that Mortal Kombat 2 will include new characters like Kitana, Baraka, Quan Chi, and Shao Kahn, who is the ruler of Outworld.

In the sequel, Earthrealm will fight against Outworld in an actual Mortal Kombat tournament, which is another exciting storyline that was teased at the end of the first movie. Tournaments between realms are a staple of the video games, which is why there is a lot of pressure for Mortal Kombat 2 to get it right, especially since the first film didn’t include one.

Mortal Kombat 2’s Tournament Can’t Disappoint After The 2021 Movie Left It Out

Mortal Kombat 2 Should Include Way More Fights

Instead of including a tournament, the 2021 movie followed Earthrealm’s champions as they were being hunted down by Outworld warriors, such as Sub-Zero, Mileena, and Goro. In the film, Shang Tsung wanted to kill Earthrealm’s fighters before the tournament began so that Outworld would have a guaranteed win. However, his plan failed, which means the sequel will include the long-awaited tournament.

Since the ending of the first movie teased the upcoming tournament, fans have now been waiting for over four years to see some action-packed fights. Therefore, audiences will not be forgiving if the tournament in Mortal Kombat 2 disappoints. Luckily, Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon thinks people will love the tournament in the sequel. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he said:

They keep score throughout the movie. There’s a visual representation of who is winning…. It’s not just a tournament for the sake of a tournament. There are huge consequences, so you really are keeping score. And there are a lot of twists in it that keep you on your toes.

It’s not clear exactly what the “visual representation” will be in Mortal Kombat 2, but Boon’s comments prove that a lot of thought was put into the tournament in the sequel. Based on these comments and many other details about the movie, it seems like Mortal Kombat 2 could be the movie fans have been waiting years for. I really hope this is the case after the 2021 movie disappointed most fans of the franchise.

The Wait For Mortal Kombat 2’s Tournament Could Be A Blessing In Disguise

Will Fans’ Patience Be Rewarded In Mortal Kombat 2?

Even though many fans were frustrated when a tournament wasn’t included in the first movie, it may actually end up being a good thing. By saving the tournament for the sequel, director Simon McQuoid and the rest of the creative team had more time to get it right. Based on Boon’s comments, it seems like this time was put to good use.

Ahead of the film’s release, I’m hoping that the tournament in Mortal Kombat 2 can be a truly unique cinematic experience. According to the movie’s writer, fans have reportedly been “cheering and jumping out of their seats” during early screenings of Mortal Kombat 2, which makes me more confident about the movie. Therefore, even though the first movie was underwhelming, Mortal Kombat 2 could end up being fantastic.
