Kingsman 3 Hopes Refueled By Eggsy Star As He Brushes Off Director’s Delay Excuse: “Is That What He Said?”

Kingsman 3 gets a promising new update from Eggsy star Taron Egerton, who brushes off director Matthew Vaughn’s delay excuse. Eggsy first hit the big screen in 2014 with the release of the first Kingsman movie, but a third installment has struggled to get off the ground.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle was released in 2017, failing to match the original in terms of box office or critical reception. After prequel The Kings Man failed to make a mark in 2021, the anticipated Kingsman 3 has remained stuck in development, with Vaughn previously saying that Egerton’s busy schedule is partly to blame for the long wait.

During a recent interview with The Playlist, Egerton pushes back on the suggestion that his schedule is to blame for Kingsman 3 having not come to fruition yet. The star expresses enthusiasm about the movie, revealing that he just recently spoke with Vaughn.

Not only are he and Vaughn interesting in bringing Eggsy’s story to a close with a third installment, but Egerton says that Harry Hart actor Colin Firth is also game to return for another outing. What it seemingly comes down to is the script and story. Check out Egerton’s full comment below:

“Is that what he said? Yeah, he’s so funny. He did call me on Friday night, actually. Yeah, look, we both want to do it. And I know Colin [Firth] is open to doing it, too. I think the interesting thing will be figuring out whether we all see the same thing. I love Matthew. Matthew is like family to me. I really think there’s a brilliant story to tell with the third Kingsman. And I still think it will happen.”

What This Means For Kingsman 3

Will The Movie Ever Happen?

Egerton’s comment would suggest that he has not yet seen a script for Kingsman 3, and it sounds like he doesn’t yet know what the story will be. This is surprising given that Vaughn seemingly confirmed at New York Comic Con in October 2023 that the film would shoot at some point in 2024.

Though enthusiasm from Egerton, Vaughn, and Firth is a promising sign for Kingsman 3 eventually coming to fruition, there are other factors that could also be playing into the delay. The Golden Circle was a financial success, but it can’t be ignored that The Kings Man was a major disappointment critically and commercially, grossing just $125 million worldwide.

The King’s Man‘s poor box office can be partly attributed to its pandemic-era release. The film sports only a 41% Rotten Tomatoes score.

After The King’s Man, Vaughn directed Argylle (2024), which ended up being an even bigger disappointment. Though the latter film is not a Kingsman movie, its failure could still play a role in why a third installment in Eggsy’s story is taking so long.

As for a potential release timeline for Kingsman 3, Egerton’s comment suggests that, if it does happen, it won’t be happening anytime soon. With seemingly no script, a late 2026 filming start date seems like the soonest the movie could start shooting. This would make a 2027 release window possible, but scheduling and additional delays could push this into 2028 or beyond.

Our Take On Egerton’s Kingsman 3 Update

Audiences Haven’t Seen The Last Of Eggsy

Though a third Kingsman movie still faces an uphill battle, confidence and enthusiasm from three key creatives is reason to be optimistic that Eggsy will eventually return. Clearly, another installment is something that Egerton, Vaughn, and Firth want, and that’s a crucial piece of the puzzle.

Whether a third film can recapture the magic of the first movie, however, is unclear. After the mixed response to The Golden Circle and the prequel, Vaughn could be taking the time to make sure Kingsman 3 is the best it can be.
