From the World of John Wick: Ballerina pᴀsses one of its final box office milestones as the spinoff becomes available on VOD. The latest John Wick spinoff follows Eve Macarro (Ana de Armas), who seeks revenge against an ᴀssᴀssin cult responsible for her father’s death. Despite high anticipation, Ballerina debuted with just $24 million during its opening weekend, but it steadily pᴀssed a few box office milestones.
Now, according to The Numbers, Ballerina has just crossed $130 million at the global box office. The box office total consists of $57 million domestically and $73 million internationally. However, it won’t be enough to make any charting impact, as Ballerina remains the second-lowest-grossing movie in the John Wick franchise, just ahead of the original 2014 installment.
Why Ballerina Is Not Exactly A Disappointment Despite Underwhelming Box Office
The John Wick Spinoff Is Doing Well On VOD
Although the $130 million box office sounds impressive at a glance, it’s unfortunately not enough to deem Ballerina a success. The John Wick movie had a budget reportedly around $90 million. The break-even point requires that a movie makes roughly two and a half times the amount of the budget, and, unfortunately, Ballerina is unlikely to hit around the $200 million mark at this point.
With Ballerina already having been in theaters for over a month and more new releases coming to theaters, there isn’t much box office momentum left for the spinoff. It will likely continue to sit at No. 4 on the franchise’s highest-grossing charts and doesn’t have the steam to overtake Chapter 2, which made $171 million.

Although Ballerina‘s box office run is disappointing, the movie has experienced some success. Following its VOD release on July 1, the John Wick spinoff has been performing well on home media, even outselling movies like Thunderbolts* and Karate Kid: Legends. This seems to indicate that the movie does have an audience, even if the box office says otherwise.
The key factor in its VOD success may come down to word of mouth since Ballerina received generally positive reviews from critics and audiences. While the Rotten Tomatoes critics’ score is 76%, the audience score is 92%, which is the John Wick franchise’s best. That’s because the movie has been commended for its incredible action and de Armas’s ability to perform the complicated stunts.
Our Take On Ballerina’s Latest Box Office Milestone
There Is Some Hope Left For The John Wick Franchise
Ballerina‘s box office was able to hit the levels of the remaining John Wick movies, which would certainly raise questions about its missteps. This comes not long after The Continental received a lukewarm reception when it premiered on Peacock in 2023, and it may cause some worry about the franchise’s future since spinoffs like Donnie Yen’s Caine spinoff are in the works.
At the same time, Ballerina isn’t the only movie suffering this ordeal, as several other blockbusters, like Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, are dealing with the underwhelming box office. It’s a startling trend in the industry as many high-budget movies are struggling to hit box office expectations.
However, given how the John Wick spinoff is doing on VOD, there is some hope left for the franchise. It may require having to re-evaluate its strategy for future projects, but there is certainly an audience that may want more from the franchise. Soon enough, Ballerina and the franchise in general may see some success when it becomes available on streaming.
