Jurᴀssic World Rebirth Box Office Quickly Hits 2 Major Milestones As It Climbs Franchise’s Charts

Jurᴀssic World Rebirth is on its way up the dinosaur franchise’s box office chart, and it’s officially crossed two major milestones. Released on July 2, the new blockbuster revives the hit series with a fresh story set years after 2022’s Jurᴀssic World Dominion.

Though the Gareth Edwards-directed Rebirth was hit with decidedly mixed reviews, that didn’t stop it from scoring a huge opening weekend. Over the five-day July 4th holiday, it earned a whopping $147.8 million domestically and $318 million worldwide, making it one of the biggest movies of the year in mere days.

Now, Jurᴀssic World Rebirth has continued to rake in the cash within its first week of release. Per The Numbers, the movie crossed the $170 million mark domestically to make its total $174.6 million. Globally, it’s officially crossed the $380 million figure.

This means Rebirth has officially surpᴀssed Jurᴀssic Park III on the franchise’s overall chart. The 2001 movie earned $365.9 million and was the lowest-grossing installment in the entire series.

What Jurᴀssic World Rebirth’s Milestone Means For Its Overall Box Office

It Faces Heavy Compeтιтion This Weekend, But Still Has Weeks To Grow

By debuting over a major holiday weekend and right at the height of the summer blockbuster season, Jurᴀssic World Rebirth was smartly positioned for success, and it so far seems to be paying off. Though it stands as the second lowest-grossing installment of the Jurᴀssic franchise, it still has weeks and weeks to keep moving up the chart.

The true test will be its second weekend. Already, the mutated dinosaurs will have to face the release of another highly-anticipated blockbuster: the new DC Universe’s Superman. Though there’s an argument to be made that these movies could target different audiences, it’s likely that the James Gunn film will take some attention away from Rebirth.

Luckily, the summer season provides ample opportunity for numerous movies to flourish. Kids are out of school and everyone’s looking to avoid the heat with some air conditioning, so even with a potentially large drop-off this weekend, Jurᴀssic World Rebirth can continue to make up ground during the week and overseas.

Our Take On Jurᴀssic World Rebirth’s Box Office Standing

It’s On A Good Path

Between the mixed reviews and Superman‘s release, I’d guess that Jurᴀssic World Rebirth will see a substantial drop at the box office this weekend. In general, blockbusters that score huge openings tend to see sharp declines, since audiences are more likely to rush out on opening weekend.

Though 2015’s Jurᴀssic World dropped only 49% in its second weekend, Fallen Kingdom and Dominion both fell 59%.

However, I’m also confident that Jurᴀssic World Rebirth will continue to be a box office success. It has earned positive reactions from viewers, suggesting good word of mouth, and its trajectory is so far comparable to the previous Jurᴀssic World movies, all of which earned $1 billion. It isn’t yet clear if the new movie can do the same, but its current outlook is good.
