Superman’s Box Office Projections Fly Past Man Of Steel Following Great Reviews

The new Superman movie could end up becoming the franchise’s highest-grossing entry if opening weekend projections turn out to be accurate. James Gunn’s DC Universe chose to begin like the old DCEU, with a Superman movie. After months of the first DCU movie breaking trailer and ticket pre-sales records, Superman is finally flying into theaters, and excitement is high.

With the movie’s wide release starting soon, Superman landed on Rotten Tomatoes with an 85% critics’ score at the time of writing. The positive reviews seem to be helping the DC movie at the box office, attracting even more moviegoers to what should be one of the year’s biggest releases. That translates into healthy opening weekend projections for Superman.

On Twitter, box office analyst Luiz Fernando shared that James Gunn’s Superman movie is projected to have the best opening weekend for any Superman solo film.

According to him, Superman aims for a $230-250M global debut, of which $130M-140M comes from its 3-day domestic opening weekend and $100M-110M from its 5-day international haul. This would make the DCU entry top all live-action Superman movies, surpᴀssing the $200.3M opening weekend of Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel.

What The Superman Movie Opening Weekend Projections Mean

The DC Universe Is Off To A Solid Start With The Man Of Steel

If the Superman opening weekend box office projections hold or are exceeded by the DC movie’s performance, then it would mean that the film would be able to recoup its budget quite quickly. While reports suggested the film could have been one of the most expensive of all time, the studio points to a $225M budget.

With a projected $230-250M global debut, James Gunn’s Superman movie would be able to make back its budget, not factoring in marketing expenses. The projections suggest the film could have a healthy box office run, though DC’s Superman movie is unlikely to reach the $1 billion mark. However, comparisons to similar DC releases in the past make a $700-850M haul possible.

If that were to happen, David Corenswet’s Superman would not only have the best opening weekend ever for a Superman solo movie, but would also hold the record for the highest-grossing Man of Steel solo film of all time. The Zack Snyder-directed Man of Steel ended its global run with $668M, which is the mark to beat for Gunn’s Superman.

Our Take On The Superman Movie Opening Weekend Projections

I’m excited about how high Superman could climb. The movie does everything I could have hoped for with this new take on the Man of Steel. The DCU needs a solid start to be able to gain confidence as it delves into other properties like Supergirl, Green Lantern, and bets like Clayface. Based on its projections, Superman should be a hit.
