Sci-fi movies today are not what they used to be, by any means. While the 21st century has seen the advent of advanced CGI and other VFX tools, modern sci-fi movies tend to be a hit or miss at the box office and among critics. That is to say, for every Dune: Part Two, there is also a The Creator.
Some great sci-fi films come out, but there are also franchise disappointments, such as Netflix’s Rebel Moon duology. Even the highly anticipated sequel The Old Guard 2 had a lackluster critical response. That may change in the coming years, as there are some exciting sci-fi тιтles releasing soon. This includes a new UFO-inundated film by Steven Spielberg, who is returning to the genre after several years.
It will also see the sci-fi return of Ryan Gosling for Project Hail Mary. Gosling acts in a wide variety of genres, but one of his most impressive past тιтles was the legacy genre sequel Blade Runner 2049. Next year will also help cement the sci-fi stardom of another key actor in the genre.
Rebecca Ferguson Has 2 Big Sci-Fi Movies Coming Out Next Year
These Are Dune: Part Three And Mercy
Rebecca Ferguson is back with two sci-fi movies next year. One will be Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Three, where she could reprise her role as Lady Jessica. Ferguson has been playing this role since the first Dune movie in 2021, and she has been an oft-praised element of the film.
But before that, she will begin her 2026 sci-fi streak with Mercy. Set for release in January 2026, the film is directed by Timur Bekmambetov. The sci-fi thriller is about a man who is wrongly accused of a crime and has to prove his innocence. Ferguson co-stars with Chris Pratt, with a supporting cast that includes Noah Fearnley, Annabelle Wallis, Chris Sullivan, Kenneth Choi, and Kylie Rogers.
While Ferguson has not been officially confirmed to return for Dune: Part Three, she has been spotted with cast members ahead of its filming.
Not only does this mean that Ferguson is going to be in two sci-fi тιтles, but they are two pretty high-profile films. The next Dune movie could end a trilogy for Villeneuve. Mercy has also been highly hyped by the team behind it, solidifying another exciting sci-fi тιтle for Ferguson.
Rebecca Ferguson’s Sci-Fi Trend Is Nothing New
She Also Has A Big Sci-Fi Show On Streaming
While 2026 will be a busy year for her work in the genre, Ferguson has been acting in sci-fi works for a while now. In the film world, this has been seen most prominently in the first two Dune movies. The Villeneuve films have given Ferguson her biggest sci-fi franchise role yet.
In addition as the producer, Ferguson also plays a critical character in the Apple TV+ series Silo. The show is set in a dystopian world wherein survivors of a ruined world are sent to live together in a giant underground silo. Silo has been successful on Apple TV+, and has been renewed for seasons 3 and 4.
Ferguson even had a part in Men in Black: International. Her role in this movie was slight, with more screen time focused on the leads played by Tessa Thompson and Chris Hemsworth. Even so, the film is part of her larger career trend towards sci-fi work.
Dune 3 & Mercy Can Make 2026 Rebecca Ferguson’s Biggest Sci-Fi Year Yet
Silo Season 4 Could Even Come Out That Year Too
Despite her history in the genre, 2026 will be Ferguson’s biggest year in sci-fi yet. Given the success of the first two movies, Dune: Part Three is nearly sure to be a mᴀssive success. It is also expected to have a December release date, which will put it in an even more prime box office spot than the previous film.
Mercy also has a decent chance to succeed upon its early 2026 release date. The January slot will limit the film’s compeтιтion, and with two big stars at the forefront, it definitely could do well. If both films get acclaim and box office glory, 2026 will truly be a huge year for Ferguson. Silo season 3 is also set for release sometime this year, so it is conceivable that season 4 could be released in 2026.
If that happened, Ferguson would have high-profile sci-fi works on both the big and small screens. This would increase her already growing clout in the genre, paving her way for other projects.
Rebecca Ferguson Just Needs One More Sci-Fi Milestone Now
She Needs Her Own Franchise
Despite her sci-fi glory, Ferguson still needs an additional sci-fi milestone to highlight her genre dominance. Despite all the credits to her name, Ferguson has never led her own sci-fi film. Rather, she has been relegated to supporting roles. If some of her supporting roles have been fantastic, such as her performance in the Dune movies, this is different from being in her own sci-fi film.
At this point, a director has to take the extra step of recognizing the star that she is by giving her a leading role. The next phase after that would be giving Ferguson her own sci-fi franchise. She would probably need a standalone film first for studios to trust her with this, but her past work shows that she definitely has this potential.
