Sinners is one of the most successful movies of the year so far, on multiple dimensions. The fifth movie from Black Panther director Ryan Coogler is an innovative, genre-bending horror film that combines a period piece with a vampire narrative.
Despite reports that it could not recoup its estimated $90 million budget, Sinners became a box office success. The movie made over $365 million worldwide and is currently the No. 8 highest-grossing movie of the year so far. The horror was also critically acclaimed, leading to a 97% Tomatometer score.
This has led to Sinners being in talks for Oscar nominations come awards season, and it is consistently touted as one of the best films of the year so far. The film was recently released on streaming, but its digital presence has quickly been usurped by a lesser-performing 2025 тιтle.
Karate Kid: Legends Quickly Jumped Above Sinners On iTunes’ VOD Charts
And It Only Released Yesterday
Karate Kid: Legends is the latest movie in the franchise. In comparison to Sinners, the film did not perform well in theaters. It made only $104 million on an estimated $45 million budget, which paled in comparison to the 2010 franchise installment.
Despite this, however, Karate Kid: Legends has currently jumped over Sinners on the iTunes VOD chart. The Jackie Chan film came in at no. 3 on the iTunes rentals charts, coming behind only Ballerina and Thunderbolts*. Sinners came in at no. 7, also losing out to Final Destination Bloodlines, Warfare, and The Phoenician Scheme.
This is made even more impressive by the fact that Karate Kid: Legends has only been on digital for a single day, as it released on VOD on July 8. This may boost the film’s profile, as it has the appeal of being a newer film, but it does still mean it beat out Sinners in an extremely short period.
Karate Kid: Legends Could Become A Bigger Hit On Streaming Than In Theaters
The Streaming Medium May Be A Better Fit For It
This bodes well for Karate Kid: Legends‘ long-term performance. Struggling at the box office, its only remaining chance to make money is through VOD sales. So far, it is already doing well in that regard with its iTunes chart status.
Once the film eventually hits a streaming platform, it could become an even bigger hit. Legends becoming a streaming hit in the modern era actually makes a lot of sense in the arc of this franchise. Audiences are used to seeing the franchise’s content on streaming after the success of Netflix’s Cobra Kai.
Karate Kid: Legends is not a Netflix project, but it could nonetheless benefit from the streaming release. The film came out in theaters during a busy season with a lot of compeтιтors. On digital and streaming platforms, it will have less compeтιтion, and thus pave the way for it to be a bigger success than it was in theaters.
