Superman’s Rotten Tomatoes Score Falls Short Of Two Very Different James Gunn Superhero Movies

James Gunn’s Superman movie has earned its Rotten Tomatoes score, and it lands in an interesting place in the director’s superhero filmography. With the DC Universe set to give fans a new era across the big and small screens, 2025’s Superman movie will be a crucial element to the rebooted franchise.

As film reviews and Superman social media reactions have been rolling out, the hype is bigger than ever for Gunn’s DCU installment. But with Gunn being no stranger to the comic book film genre, it raises the question of how Superman is comparing to his previous Marvel Cinematic Universe and DC movies.

Superman, which opens in theaters this week, has officially become certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with a critics’ score of 86%, and the DCU installment marks Gunn’s fifth major superhero movie. While Superman’s critics’ score may change in the next few days, when additional reviews get logged on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s Gunn’s third-highest ranking superhero film according to Rotten Tomatoes-approved critics:

What Superman’s RT Score Compared To James Gunn’s Other Superhero Movies Means

Even though Superman’s Rotten Tomatoes score debut is only from critics at the time of this story’s publication, time will tell if it will climb higher up in Gunn’s superhero filmography. There are more critics who are still having their reviews added to Rotten Tomatoes, so it could go either way.

It’s crucial to take into account that Superman is technically Gunn’s first comic book film that focuses on a тιтular hero, as all his previous ones were ensembles, both with the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy and The Suicide Squad. But as of right now, Superman is at least outdoing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in the critics’ scores.

It will definitely be interesting to see, in the future, how the Rotten Tomatoes scores may look for Gunn if he makes more DC films centered on a specific character, after 2025’s Superman. If there ends up also being a Superman 2 movie down the line from Gunn, that Rotten Tomatoes score will also be fascinating to follow after the first Superman movie.

Our Take On Superman’s RT Score Compared To James Gunn’s Other Superhero Movies

While Superman’s Rotten Tomatoes score may be ranked third for Gunn’s superhero films, it wouldn’t be shocking if it potentially surpᴀsses The Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy. Nevertheless, this is still a great start for Superman, especially after how Warner Bros. Discovery’s recent years with superhero films have not been anywhere near this good in reception.

What remains to be seen is how Superman’s box office results will play out worldwide, as that will also be a huge factor in whether or not the film is seen as a success at DC Studios. But hopefully, with a strong batch of favorable reviews and positive word of mouth for Superman, the movie will also end up being a commercial hit.
