Box Office: Jurᴀssic World Rebirth Stomps Past Projections With Record-Breaking Debut

Jurᴀssic World Rebirth has stomped past its original projections during its opening weekend. The new movie, which is the seventh installment in the Jurᴀssic franchise, was directed by Gareth Edwards and stars Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali, and Jonathan Bailey.

The Jurᴀssic World Rebirth release kicked off on Wednesday ahead of the Fourth of July holiday in the United States, coming H๏τ on the heels of the Brad Pitt racing film F1 The Movie, which opened on June 27 with the highest-grossing debut ever for Apple Studios.

Per ᴅᴇᴀᴅline, as of Saturday morning, Jurᴀssic World Rebirth is expected to close out its debut weekend with a 3-day domestic gross of $85.4 million and a 5-day domestic gross of $141.2 million, exceeding its original projections of $81.7 million and $137.5 million respectively. This is more than enough for it to topple F1 The Movie and take No. 1.

Additionally, it has smashed a box office record by earning the best single-day Fourth of July domestic gross of the 2020s, beating out the previous No. 1 тιтles, which were 2020’s Relic ($48,259), 2021’s F9 ($5.2 million), 2022’s Minions: The Rise of Gru ($16 million), 2023’s Sound of Freedom ($14.2 million), and 2024’s Despicable Me 4 ($20.3 million).

What This Means For Jurᴀssic World Rebirth

It Is On Track To Become A Success

This domestic debut is a solid start for the dinosaur movie in a number of ways. For one thing, the reported budget of Jurᴀssic World Rebirth is just $180 million, which is a total that it should have no trouble pᴀssing at the domestic box office alone.

Its projected global debut total of $312.5 million is already set to obliterate that milestone by the end of Sunday, also making it the ninth highest-grossing movie of the year so far, worldwide. Additionally, Rebirth is set to earn a 3-day domestic debut that is higher than any installment in the original Jurᴀssic Park trilogy.

Below, see a breakdown of the opening weekends and worldwide box office totals of all the Jurᴀssic Park and World movies:

тιтle

3-Day Domestic Debut

Worldwide Total

Jurᴀssic Park (1993)

$50.1 million

$978.2 million

The Lost World: Jurᴀssic Park (1997)

$72.1 million

$618.6 million

Jurᴀssic Park III (2001)

$50.8 million

$368.8 million

Jurᴀssic World (2015)

$208.8 million

$1.67 billion

Jurᴀssic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018)

$148 million

$1.31 billion

Jurᴀssic World Dominion (2022)

$145.1 million

$1 billion

Jurᴀssic World Rebirth (2025)

$85.4 million (projected)

TBD

While the standalone sequel is trailing behind the previous installments in the Jurᴀssic World sub-franchise, if it maintains its current trajectory compared to those тιтles, it could end up grossing between $600 million and $770 million by the end of its theatrical run.

While its exact break-even point is unknown, it is unlikely that it needs to earn much more than $450 million in order to turn a profit, so this could be good news for the longevity of the franchise and the potential Jurᴀssic World 5, especially if that movie can be kept on a slightly тιԍнтer budget that reduces its financial risk.

Our Take On The Weekend Box Office

The Reign Of PG Movies Is Over

With Jurᴀssic World Rebirth taking the No. 1 slot from F1 The Movie, PG-13 movies are beginning to rule the roost this summer after every weekend from Memorial Day through F1‘s ascent was dominated by Lilo & Sтιтch and How to Train Your Dragon, both of which were rated PG.

Jurᴀssic World Rebirth may have cemented a trend of PG-13 No. 1 тιтles that will continue throughout July thanks to the upcoming Superman, due July 11, and Fantastic Four, which debuts on July 25. If Superman‘s sophomore weekend can take No. 1 over the R-rated I Know What You Did Last Summer and the PG Smurfs, PG-13 тιтles seem set to dominate.
