Grant Gustin Only Wants To Join James Gunn’s DC Universe As The Flash

Grant Gustin shares how he would want to play The Flash again in James Gunn’s DC Universe franchise. While the DCU’s Chapter 1: “Gods and Monsters” slate has numerous reboots in the works for multiple DC heroes, the Scarlet Speedster’s fate is still currently unknown.

According to Gunn, in December 2024, there is no development on a new The Flash movie in the DCU for the time being at DC Studios. However, someone who is no stranger at all to the world of The Flash is making it clear that he is open to revisiting the fastest man alive.

At the recent FAN EXPO Denver, Gustin, along with several The Flash TV cast members, attended a special Q&A. During the panel, which ScreenRant was in attendance for, a fan asked Gustin, “If James Gunn cast you in his DCU, who would you want to play?” which led to the DC TV star answering with one simple word: “Flash.” Check out the video below, courtesy of @SuperFlashWest:

The Flash ran for nearly a decade on The CW, with the Arrowverse drama concluding after nine seasons on the network in May 2023. Even after Superman & Lois’ conclusion in December 2024, The Flash is the longest-running series in the Arrowverse franchise, with 184 episodes having aired.

What Grant Gustin’s The Flash Comments Mean For James Gunn’s DCU

While Gunn and Gustin have shared openly that they have talked about the DCU through social media, it has been more about Superman than The Flash. With Gustin’s latest response, it leans more into how the Arrowverse star is clearly still very invested in The Flash legacy, even if he isn’t seriously being considered to be the DCU’s main Scarlet Speedster.

Even if Gustin isn’t attached to the DCU franchise as of right now, that could always change, and despite his response at the FAN EXPO Denver panel, it’s hard to imagine that he wouldn’t be open to playing other DC roles if offered. When it comes to having Gustin in the DCU, Gunn has previously said that he’d love to work with The Flash star at some point.

Our Take On Grant Gustin’s The Flash Comments

Grant Gustin's Barry Allen in his Flash Costume in the Arrowverse

Seeing Gustin still being pᴀssionate about The Flash is always appreciated, whether it’s through the Arrowverse or in a new franchise like the DCU. Whether or not Gustin would ever be the DCU’s main Flash remains to be seen, even though it seems more likely they will go with a new actor as Barry.

In theory, if Gunn wants to use Wally West as their main Scarlet Speedster in his reboot, Gustin could always play the DCU’s Barry for a short time. Using the multiverse concept where The CW actor portrays a doppelgänger, without running into any conflicts with his Arrowverse counterpart, also allows The Flash TV show to maintain its legacy.

It would be a fun nod to fans who followed Gustin’s era in the Arrowverse, while also leaning into the DCU’s main concept, where many heroes are already established in this continuity. But for now, DCU fans will have to wait and see how The Flash mythology gets tackled by DC Studios.
