This article contains spoilers for Sinners. One of the best surprises of 2025 was Sinners. Director Ryan Coogler had already gained acclaim, so the movie had a lot of hype, but it exceeded expectations at the box office than initially predicted. Plus, the film was universally liked, with even critics and audiences having a rare agreement about the horror’s sheer quality and genre-bending elements.
Part of why Sinners‘ huge success was a pleasant surprise is because the film is an original horror movie. More often than not, films in this genre (especially when they are R-rated) struggle to make significant strides. As of now, there are no active plans for Sinners 2 to be made. However, some comments, as well as some elements of the film itself, suggest that a sequel could happen.
How Sinners Sets Up A Sequel
The Post Credits Scene Jumps Forward 60 Years
The vast majority of Sinners is set in 1932. Because of the nature of the vampiric plot line, most characters die at the end of the movie, including Smoke, one of the main brothers. The lone survivor turned out to be Sammie, who eventually moved to Louisiana.
However, one of Sinners post-credits scenes takes place in 1992. It flashes forward to reveal that Sammie is now a famed blues musician, playing at Chicago bars. Additionally, both Stack and Mary have survived in their vampire forms.
This leaves six whole decades in between the events of the film and its post-credits sequence. As such, this could set up a sequel that either tells part of these events or goes into a 1990s storyline involving an older Sammie.
Sinners 2 Shouldn’t Happen
Sinners Is Better As-Is
Part of why Sinners was so appealing, however, is that it is lightning in a bottle. In a world inundated with sequels, spinoffs, and franchise films, Coogler’s film was a rare moment of pure originality.
Furthermore, a lot of the movie’s heart comes from the relationship between Smoke and Stack. Because Smoke died in the final shootout of the movie, the sequel would only be able to have one of those two characters, stripping something away from the film’s core.
Instead of a Sinners sequel, it would be far preferred to encourage the production of more daring original content. Perhaps it would even encourage Warner Bros. to pour additional money into Coogler, so he can make another great original film.
Could Sinners 2 Happen? What We Know
The Box Office Win Is A Huge Incentive
Coogler also doesn’t think that Sinners 2 is a good idea. Speaking with Ebony back in April, the director said that he “wanted the movie to feel like a full meal.” He implied that it was never his “intention” to make a sequel film.
That said, Sinners was a huge box-office hit that is not attached to an existing franchise. As such, Warner Bros. may push for a sequel and make more money as it turns into a franchise. So even with no active plans for it, Sinners 2 is very possible.
