Dwayne Johnson and Timothée Chalamet headline a major A24 battle with one surprising twist. Throughout his acting career, the WWE star has opted mostly for traditional action blockbusters, such as the Fast & Furious franchise, or family fare, such as the Jumanji movies. However, one of his upcoming roles will be his most dramatic performance yet and is expected to be a potential awards season contender.
On the other hand, Chalamet is one of the biggest young stars and has already been nominated for two Academy Awards – first for 2017’s Call Me By Your Name and again for his performance as Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown. Considering his talent and selection of roles, Chalamet is bound to win an Academy Award someday, and he could see another nomination as early as 2026.
Dwayne Johnson Vs. Timothée Chalamet Could Happen At The Oscars 2026 – Thanks To The Safdie Bros.
They Star In The Smashing Machine & Marty Supreme
Dwayne Johnson versus Timothée Chalamet could happen at the 98th Academy Awards in 2026, thanks to the Safdie brothers. The former stars in A24’s The Smashing Machine, written and directed by Benny Safdie, as the former wrestler and MMA fighter Mark Kerr, following the peak of his career during the no-holds-barred era of the UFC, to his struggles with substance abuse.
Chalamet stars in A24’s Marty Supreme, written and directed by Josh Safdie, as the professional ping-pong player Marty Mauser, a determined young man whose ambitions are dismissed by everyone, and endures unimaginable trials on his relentless quest for greatness. Chalamet spent several months training for the ping-pong scenes, working with former professional players Diego Schaaf and Wei Wang as his coaches.
The Smashing Machine and Marty Supreme are both expected to be awards season contenders and are positioned on the calendar as such, with the former releasing in October, followed by the latter in December. More specifically, these two A24 movies could result in both Johnson and Chalamet getting Best Actor nominations at the Academy Awards.
The Rock Or Chalamet: Who Has The Better Oscars Chance Right Now?
Chalamet Has Been Nominated Twice Before
Of course, there will be other names in the conversation, including Daniel Day-Lewis returning to acting in Anemone, releasing this October, Jeremy Allen White as Bruce Springsteen in Deliver Me From Nowhere, Leonardo DiCaprio in One Battle After Another, and many more. But looking at The Rock and Chalamet specifically, who has the better Oscars chance right now?
Chalamet, at 29 years old, is still very young to win an Oscar, yet he might already have a stronger case considering his two previous nominations. However, Johnson‘s physical and vocal transformation in The Smashing Machine is a huge surprise and a major career turn, which is the kind of performance the Academy loves to reward. For now, it’s still too early to tell.
The Smashing Machine releases in theaters on October 3, followed by Marty Supreme on December 25.
