Lilo & Sтιтch Crosses Vital Global Box Office Milestone To Become 2025’s Biggest Hollywood Movie

Lilo & Sтιтch crosses a vital global box office milestone to become the biggest Hollywood movie of 2025. A live-action remake of Disney’s 2002 animated movie of the same name, the new film follows the same story of a solitary Hawaiian girl who forms a bond with a fugitive alien, helping to mend her fragmented family.

The Lilo & Sтιтch live-action remake features Maia Kealoha in her film debut as Lilo and the original movie’s writer-director, Chris Sanders, reprising his voice role as Sтιтch. The cast also includes Sydney Elizebeth Agudong, Billy Magnussen, Hannah Waddingham, Courtney B. Vance, and Zach Galifianakis. Original cast members Amy Hill, Tia Carrere, and Jason Scott Lee return in different roles.

Now, after playing in theaters for six weeks, Lilo & Sтιтch has pᴀssed A Minecraft Movie at the box office to become the biggest Hollywood movie of the year to date (China’s Ne Zha 2 is still the highest-grossing worldwide at $1.8–2.2 billion). According to ᴅᴇᴀᴅline, Lilo & Sтιтch stands at $957.6 million worldwide, having pᴀssed A Minecraft Movie‘s $954.9 million.

To date, these are the only two Hollywood movies to surpᴀss $900 million worldwide, with the third place Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning sitting way behind at $564 million.

What This Means For Lilo & Sтιтch

Will It Pᴀss $1B?

By becoming the biggest Hollywood movie of the year to date, Lilo & Sтιтch remains on pace to become the first Hollywood release of 2025 to hit the $1 billion benchmark globally. This is something A Minecraft Movie wasn’t able to do, which topped out at $954.9 million, and has been streaming on HBO Max since June 21.

To be fair to A Minecraft Movie, it’s still the top domestic earner of the year to date, bringing in $423.9 million, ahead of Lilo & Sтιтch, which has made $403.7 million in the United States. Both movies are the only ones in 2025 to surpᴀss $400 million domestically, again, with The Final Reckoning sitting way behind at $187 million.

Lilo & Sтιтch has been on track to make $1 billion ever since it had a mᴀssive $182.6 million debut over the four-day Memorial Day weekend, setting a new record for the biggest opening during that holiday, beating Top Gun: Maverick‘s $160.5 million. That movie made $1.4 billion, meaning Lilo & Sтιтch has been destined for the $1 billion benchmark.

Our Take On Lilo & Sтιтch’s Box Office

The Continuing Power Of Disney’s Nostalgic Female-Led Properties

One of the biggest takeaways from Lilo & Sтιтch‘s box office is the continuing commercial success of Disney’s nostalgic female-led franchises. Lilo & Sтιтch is on track to make $1 billion, with women making up 62% of its audience, while Moana 2 also made over $1 billion, with women making up 71% of its audience. With this in mind, Disney’s Freakier Friday sequel with Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan could also be destined for great things at the box office later this summer.
