Blumhouse’s $18M Box Office Disappointment & Studio’s Future Openly Addressed By Exec: “We All Thought Megan Was Like Superman”

M3GAN 2.0 has underperformed mᴀssively at the box office, and the Blumhouse Productions failure has already been addressed by the head of the studio. The first M3GAN was one of Blumhouse Productions’ biggest box office hits in recent years, and its viral status meant that Blumhouse Production had high hopes for the film’s 2025 sequel, which was released on June 27.

However, M3GAN 2.0 has only made $20 million as of the writing of this article, which is low compared to the film’s estimated $25 million budget. In an interview with The Town with Matthew Belloni, Blumhouse Productions CEO Jason Blum discussed the film’s box office failure, stating that they thought they “could do anything” with M3GAN. This led to them changing genres and the decision to release M3GAN 2.0 in the summer.

Blum acknowledges that the sequel failed to meet expectations, with them overestimating M3GAN‘s potential. However, he states that “if you look at any mᴀssive talent… every one of your favorite people have gone through slumps. And that applies to Blumhouse, too.” Here are Jason Blum’s comments on the issue:

“We all thought Megan was like Superman. We could do anything to her. We could change genres. We could put her in the summer. We could make her look different. We could turn her from a bad guy into a good guy. And we classically over-thought how powerful people’s engagement was with her… I said to [Blumhouse employees] this morning that if you look at any mᴀssive talent, whether they are a movie star or whether they are a production company or whether they are a studio, every one of your favorite people have gone through slumps. And that applies to Blumhouse, too.”

What Jason Blum’s Comments Mean For M3GAN

How Will This Impact Future M3GAN Movies

M3GAN 2.0 was clearly a box office disappointment, and it is refreshing to hear Jason Blum address these issues head-on. His discussions of Blumhouse Productions’ mindset surrounding the M3GAN franchise gives insight on how issues like this happen, as Blumhouse was overconfident in an unproven franchise.

It seems that Blum is less confident in M3GAN now, and this could spell trouble for the future of the franchise. Blumhouse Productions may be hesitant to greenlight a third M3GAN movie, pointing to the box office failure of the second film as a justification for this.

This could also impact the upcoming M3GAN spinoff movie, SOULM8TE. If a mainline M3GAN movie can’t succeed at the box office, a spinoff without M3GAN has even worse chances. It could lead to a smaller marketing campaign or even a cancellation, depending on how confident Blumhouse is in the film.

Our Take On M3GAN 2.0’s Box Office Failure

It Isn’t All That Surprising

M3GAN 2.0‘s box office failure isn’t surprising, as it was released at a bad time. The film had to face compeтιтion from movies like Lilo & Sтιтch, How to Train Your Dragon, and Elio, and in the following weeks it would have to face Jurᴀssic World Rebirth, Superman, and The Fantastic Four.

M3GAN 2.0 switching from a horror film to an action comedy also didn’t help, alienating some of the audience members who were fans of the original. The original film’s box office was helped by its viral marketing, another benefit that M3GAN 2.0 didn’t have.
