What I Know What You Did Last Summer’s R Rating Means For The Movie

It Continues The Franchise’s 28-Year Trend (But With Some Additional Disclaimers)

I Know What You Did Last Summer‘s MPA rating continues the franchise’s 28-year trend since every film, going back to the original I Know What You Did Last Summer from 1997, has been rated R. The first film received a restricted rating solely for “strong horror violence and language.”

The 1998 sequel I Still Know What You Did Last Summer – which brought back Jennifer Love Hewitt, Freddie Prinze Jr., and Muse Watson – was also rated R for “intense terror violence and gore, strong language” but also for “some drug use,” mainly due to Jack Black’s dreadlocked pothead, тιтus Telesco, who is briefly seen smoking marijuana.

The 2006 direct-to-video sequel I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer is rated R for just “horror violence,” and not language or drug use. I Know What You Did Last Summer (2025) has received an R rating for “bloody horror violence, language, brief drug use,” but also the additional disclaimer of “some Sєxual content,” the first film in the franchise to feature that specific warning.

Our Take On I Know What You Did Last Summer’s R Rating

It’s Not Surprising, But Still A Good Sign

While it’s not surprising that I Know What You Did Last Summer (2025) continues the franchise trend of R ratings, it’s still a good sign, since it’s not uncommon for R-rated franchises to be rebooted with PG-13 ratings in an attempt to appeal to a wider audience, such as in the cases of RoboCop, Terminator, Alien vs. Predator, and The Expendables franchises. I Know What You Did Last Summer‘s R rating ensures it can recreate all the bloody violence and horror the previous films are known for.

I Know What You Did Last Summer releases in theaters on July 18.
