“It’s In The Lap Of The Gods”: Jurᴀssic World Rebirth Director Weighs In On Sequel Prospects

This article contains spoilers for Jurᴀssic World Rebirth.Jurᴀssic World Rebirth director Gareth Edwards addresses the chances of a potential sequel. The latest installment follows a covert ops team hired for a top-secret mission to gather DNA from dinosaurs inhabiting a forbidden island. Following their adventure, the new Jurᴀssic World movie presents many new possibilities for the franchise going forward by introducing new characters and mutant dinosaurs.

While speaking with ScreenRant‘s Liam Crowley, Edwards discussed the possibilities of a sequel to Jurᴀssic World Rebirth. The filmmaker liked his idea of a heart disease cure going wrong and wiping out humanity, leading to a new Jurᴀssic Age, much like the ending of Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

However, Edwards revealed that he envisioned Jurᴀssic World Rebirth‘s story as a standalone film and didn’t have any discussions of making a sequel afterward. Read his full quote below:

“Maybe there’s something in there. But no, we tried to make this movie like a single standalone. When I look back on sequels, trilogies that I love, what they all have in common is that the first movie was on its own, and then it became a high-class problem of how do we now make the others? I’ve genuinely never talked about it with anybody. Not a single conversation with David Koepp or Frank Marshall or Universal about a sequel. I think everyone’s like (knocks on wood), all they want is for people to really like this movie and make the best film we can, and that’s it. And then it’s in the lap of the gods, everything else, really.”

What Gareth Edwards’s Comments Mean For Jurᴀssic World Rebirth 2

Jurᴀssic World Rebirth May Not Get A Sequel Unless Edwards Has The Right Story

Based on his comments, it appears that there are no confirmed plans for a sequel to Jurᴀssic World Rebirth, at least not one with his involvement. The director made it clear that he’s not interested in making a follow-up movie unless he and everyone else involved believe it will be something people will enjoy and that it’s the best film they can make.

He has acknowledged the issues that arose with making the divisive Jurᴀssic World movies, especially after Jurᴀssic Park set a high bar in 1993. Even Rebirth seems to recognize the public’s exhaustion with the franchise, as evidenced by the many characters in the film who have grown tired of dinosaurs in the modern world.

It’s worth noting that all three Jurᴀssic World movies made over $1 billion, which makes the box office prospects look promising for Rebirth.

Thus, the public’s reception to Jurᴀssic World Rebirth could be a considerable factor in determining whether the franchise will continue with more films. This will particularly be based on the movie’s box office, which is expected to have a strong debut during the Fourth of July weekend. If the movie can recoup the $180 million budget and go into profitable margins, sequel chances will look strong.

It’s worth noting that all three Jurᴀssic World movies made over $1 billion, which makes the box office prospects look promising for Rebirth. However, the upcoming installment will face some compeтιтion with the releases of Superman and Fantastic Four: First Steps in a very busy July schedule, so it’s unclear how it will perform in the long term.

Our Take On Jurᴀssic World Rebirth 2

Jurᴀssic World Rebirth Seems Better Off As A Standalone Film

Jonathan Bailey and Scarlet Johansson in Jurᴀssic World Rebirth

Like Steven Spielberg’s Jurᴀssic Park, Edwards’s new film succeeds as a self-contained narrative and doesn’t need a sequel. Despite some references to the previous Jurᴀssic Park and Jurᴀssic World films, Edwards’s movie feels like a separate story within the franchise’s world. No legacy characters appear in the story, and no major plot points need to be resolved in another film.

Jurᴀssic World Rebirth ends with Zora departing the dino-filled island, carrying the DNA needed to create a cure for heart disease. However, the film doesn’t seem to depict many significant changes to the world beyond that, as humanity’s overall relationship with dinosaurs remains the same.

Although it sounds like Edwards would want to make another Jurᴀssic World film, it seems he would rather not make a movie that he thinks wouldn’t satisfy audiences or wouldn’t live up to the standards set by the original.

Unless Edwards can ideate a continuation, ending Jurᴀssic World Rebirth‘s story the way it did seems like the best decision for the franchise. Although it sounds like he would want to make another Jurᴀssic World film, it seems he would rather not make a movie that he thinks wouldn’t satisfy audiences or wouldn’t live up to the standards set by the original. All in all, it’s too early to tell if the director will return to continue the Jurᴀssic World franchise on the big screen.
