Jurᴀssic World Rebirth’s Ending Could Change The Entire $6 Billion Franchise

The following contains spoilers for Jurᴀssic World Rebirth, now playing in theatersJurᴀssic World Rebirth‘s ending sees the surviving members of the cast struggle to escape the mutant D-Rex with the means to change their world forever. Directed by Gareth Edwards, Jurᴀssic World Rebirth is a fresh start for the series that shifts the focus away from established characters. Instead, the film focuses on two groups that end up stranded on Isle Saint-Hubert — an innocent family on vacation, and a team of mercenaries in search of contraband dinosaur DNA.

Jurᴀssic World Rebirth‘s cast of characters spend most of the film doing their best to survive, with the largely stand-alone adventure backing away from the grander worldbuilding of the previous trilogy to focus more on dinosaur thrills. Although the film ends fairly conclusively, it also lays the seeds for a possible sequel that expands on the revelations about InGen’s previous experiments. Here’s what happens in Jurᴀssic World Rebirth‘s ending and what it means for the future of the franchise.

Who Survives Jurᴀssic World Rebirth’s Ending

Jurᴀssic World Rebirth Has One Of The Lowest Death Counts Of Any Jurᴀssic Movie

Jurᴀssic World Rebirth‘s intense ending actually doesn’t feature too many casualties, with almost the entire main cast surviving their encounter with the D-Rex. By the third act of Jurᴀssic World Rebirth, Duncan and Zola’s ᴀssembled crew (Bobby, Nina, and Leclerc) have been picked off by dinosaurs across the island.

This leaves Zora, Loomis, Duncan, and Martin Krebs from the hunting party heading into the third act. Meanwhile, the Delgado family (Reuben, his daughters Isabella and Teresa, and the latter’s boyfriend Xavier) end up stranded on the island as well. They have many encounters with dinosaurs, but they all actually survive the film.

Krebs is caught and killed by the D-Rex, but the rest of the film’s cast are able to make it to a boat in time to escape. Even Duncan Kinkaid survives despite luring the D-Rex away from the others, a fake-out death that turns out to be the biggest twist in the film.

On the whole, only five of Jurᴀssic World Rebirth‘s named characters die on-screen in the film, which is a relatively small number of casualties for this franchise. This also means that any of these characters could return for a sequel, with the primary trio of Zora, Loomis, and Duncan set up as a potential anchor to hook the series around.

Who Created Jurᴀssic World Rebirth’s Mutant Dinosaurs And Why

Jurᴀssic World Rebirth’s New Dinosaur Variants Were Created Years Ago

One of the unique draws of Jurᴀssic World Rebirth is the introduction of new mutant dinosaurs. This includes the horrifying Distortus rex or D-Rex and the flying raptors known as Mutadons. The mutant dinosaurs were initially conceived decades prior to the present day to further propel public interest in dinosaurs, pushing the boundaries of InGen’s cloning technology.

These experiments didn’t work out as InGen expected, leading to the creation of monstrous and dangerous creatures that the company hid from the world at large. The labs on Isle Saint-Hubert were eventually abandoned, leaving it to be overrun by a mix of traditional dinosaur species and these new mutated variants.

The reason the mutant dinosaurs haven’t played a major part in the series is that they were purposefully hidden by InGen. As Krebs explains to the rest of the hunting party, InGen hid the cost of the failures in R&D, effectively writing off the island and leaving it to develop as it has.

Isle Saint-Hubert effectively serves as a showcase of how far the genetically modified creatures of the series could go if they were allowed to take over an environment. The mutated dinosaurs are seen interacting with other creatures, with a Mutadon quickly dispatching a raptor as a sign of its dangerous potential.

Jurᴀssic World Rebirth’s Ending Could Change The Entire Franchise

The mission for the hunting party in Jurᴀssic World Rebirth is to recover the DNA of three mᴀssive dinosaurs. The theory is that this could allow scientists to develop new life-saving medicines, albeit it under the control of the pharmaceutical company that Krebs works for. Loomis instead suggests making the information public.

Zora goes with the latter option in the ending of Jurᴀssic World Rebirth, which could lead to a radically different future for humanity in Jurᴀssic World Rebirth. While dinosaurs still roam the world, humanity has lost much interest in saving them. This discovery could reinvigorate the public’s desire to have dinosaurs around, leading to a truly hybrid world.

This could bring the new characters into the orbit of the villains from the previous trilogy (or at least the ones that are still alive).

The discovery of mutant dinosaurs might also lead to more ambitious scientists to develop mutant dinosaurs, potentially creating a new breed of weapons. This could bring the new characters into the orbit of the villains from the previous trilogy (or at least the ones that are still alive).

How Does Jurᴀssic World Rebirth Connect To The Previous Films

Jurᴀssic World Rebirth Doesn’t Have Any Returning Characters

Jurᴀssic World Rebirth is specifically designed as something of a fresh start for the franchise. Although it builds on the events of the previous films, it’s unconnected to those characters and their personal storylines. However, there are some threads between the old and the new characters that could be played up in future stories.

Loomis is the new dinosaur expert introduced in the film, who reveals to Zora that he was a student of Alan Grant. One of the lead protagonists of the original trilogy before he returned for Jurᴀssic World: Dominion, Grant’s status as a teacher suggests that he’s settled down once again in the years since Dominion.

Jurᴀssic World Rebirth also reveals the fate of InGen, which has gone fully bankrupt. It was through these legal proceedings that Krebs’ company discovered the existence of the mutant dinosuars, as well as their potential health benefits. This also leaves a vacuum open for other companies to step in, especially after the true potential of dinosaur DNA is exposed to the world at large.

Does Jurᴀssic World Rebirth Set Up A Sequel?

For the most part, Jurᴀssic World Rebirth feels like a one-and-done story. The Delgado family arc ends with the group reaffirmed in their love for one another, especially after the initially skeptical Reuben comes around on Xavier. The arcs of Zora, Loomis, and Duncan likewise feel fairly complete by the film’s end.

However, the conclusion of Jurᴀssic World Rebirth does leave enough lingering threads that a storyline could easily expand into a sequel. The discovery of dinosaur DNA’s potential could easily allow propel bad actors to continue experimenting, leading to more mutant variants.

A return to Isle Saint-Hubert could be a handy way of introducing more dinosaur variants, and the mysterious fate of the island’s workers and leadership could easily be revisited for a sequel. Jurᴀssic World Rebirth lays the groundwork for an unpredictable future in the series, which makes it an especially exciting fresh start.

The True Meaning Of Jurᴀssic World Rebirth’s Ending

Jurᴀssic World Rebirth is largely focused on telling a fun action story, but there’s a strong undercurrent of grief baked into the character arcs of Zora, Duncan, and Loomis. The former two spend much of the film grieving for previous deaths, including Zora’s friend and Duncan’s son.

Duncan and Zora are genuinely upset at the deaths of their teammates, with only a dogged resolve to survive the mission keeping them going. Ultimately, though, they get the chance to actually save someone when they help ensure that the Delgados escape the island.

This is very much the core of Duncan’s storyline, as he’s the hunter who is most willing to throw off other plans to help the civilians, and he actively distracts the D-Rex before it can get ahold of Isabella. These bursts of empathy break through the grief and self-interest that motivate Zora, leading to her more noble decision in the finale.

Loomis isn’t dealing with personal loss, but rather the fading of his pᴀssions from the world. A true student of Alan Grant, Loomis is portrayed with a genuine wonder at the existence of dinosaurs, and is repeatedly shown to be heartbroken by their fading prescene in the world.

By the end of the film, Loomis has also worked through these feelings, finding joy in the majesty of the remaining dinosaurs and purpose in proving their value to the world. It’s an interesting emotional core that grounds all three of Jurᴀssic World Rebirth‘s main hunters.
