The new Superman movie will soon be flying into theaters without one scene, which was cut after testing negatively. James Gunn’s first movie at DC, after finishing his Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy at Marvel, releases next week. The DC Universe’s Superman movie will introduce a new version of the Man of Steel with multiple heroes and villains alongside him.
So far, most of the new Superman updates have included the same roster of characters. Superman, Lois Lane, and Lex Luthor have a prominent role in the footage, which was to be expected from the anticipated DC movie. However, another character also appears frequently in the trailers: Krypto. The reason for the Superman movie scene being cut involved the Superdog.
Speaking with Jake’s Takes, Superman‘s Engineer star María Gabriela de Faría and Eve Teschmacher actress Sara Sampaio revealed that a scene featuring Ultraman punching Krypto was cut.
According to Sampaio, the reason for the fight being scrapped was that it did not perform well in the test screening. Check out the full exchange below:
Interviewer: There’s a scene where you’re not the kindest to Krypto and out loud I heard someone go, “Oh, hell no.”
María Gabriela de Faría: Oh, that’s awesome.
Sara Sampaio: They actually cut a worse scene from…
María Gabriela de Faría: That’s right. That’s right.
Sara Sampaio: Me and Nick [Hoult] were a little bit pissed about it, but it’s okay.
Interviewer: Did this go full John Wick?
María Gabriela de Faría: Oh, no…
Interviewer: What did… Now you have to tell. What did they cut?
María Gabriela de Faría: I guess, I mean, I guess you can say it.
Sara Sampaio: Well, they cut Ultraman punching Krypto. Because, apparently, it did really bad in the test screening.
María Gabriela de Faría: It’s not okay. You can’t punch a dog. You can’t punch, I… Okay. No, I did not punch the dog. The dog attacked me first.
What The Superman Movie Deleted Scene Means
Krypto The Superdog Will Still ᴀssist Superman In Fights
James Gunn’s Marvel movies are no stranger to violence when it comes to animals, though there is always a profound reason behind it. Rocket Raccoon was essentially the main character in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, with his dark backstory of him and his friends being experimented on for years being quite impactful. Superman would have done it differently.
Based on how the Superman movie stars described the moment, it seemed like, during a fight scene, Ultraman would just punch Krypto. While the character is a villain, so that action would be in line with that, the moment might have been seen as too much by the test audience. Movies like John Wick have made viewers wary of such situations.

The Superman movie’s deleted scene should not affect the film in any huge way. As Faría mentions how Krypto attacks the Engineer and the two fight, it seems like the Superdog will continue to be present in action sequences just fine. What changes is that perhaps no impactful moments of Krypto getting hurt will be in the DC movie.
Our Take On The Superman Movie Deleted Scene
I’m fine with the Superman movie cutting the scene of Ultraman punching Krypto. I would not have had a problem if it had been in the film, but it seems like the moment being cut will not take away from anything substantial in terms of plot. As such, I see no issue in cutting a scene that might have impacted others’ experience.

Krypto will still be present in plenty of action scenes, and I can’t wait to see that. The cut scene does reveal that Ultraman will not be pulling his punches in the movie. If he has no problem striking Krypto, then I can’t wait to see how the villain’s fights with David Corenswet’s Man of Steel in Superman will go.
