Dora The Explorer’s New Movie Fits Oddly Into The Franchise

Dora and the Search for Sol Dorado is the second live-action movie from the Dora the Explorer franchise, but is it a sequel to its predecessor, 2019’s Dora and the Lost City of Gold, or does it tell a completely new story?

A reason that this question comes immediately to the fore is the fact that the Dora and the Search for Sol Dorado cast, which includes Samantha Lorraine as Dora Márquez and Jacob Rodriguez as her cousin Diego, is completely different from the 2019 movie.

The majority of the casting changes could have been explained by the fact that six years pᴀssed between the releases of the two movies, necessitating new performers to step in to play the young characters as the original stars aged out of their original roles. However, Sol Dorado‘s storyline clearly answers the question of whether it is a sequel.

Dora And The Search For Sol Dorado Is A Reboot

The Lost City Of Gold Is Not Part Of Its Canon

Although they seem similar at first glance, the storyline of Sol Dorado makes it quite clear that the new movie is a pure reboot, because it is not connected to the canon of 2019’s Dora and the Lost City of Gold in any way. In fact, the introduction of the movie features a completely new origin story for Dora.

The canon of The Lost City of Gold is entirely negated by this opening in a number of ways. For instance, in the 2019 movie, Dora became obsessed with finding the lost Incan city of Parapata after being told about it by her parents, whereas in Sol Dorado, she beame interested in the тιтular Incan artifact thanks to her grandfather.

While these events could technically have overlapped, other elements of the flashback sequence completely reverse City of Gold. Most notably, it has Diego stay in the Amazon rainforest with Dora as they grow into teenagers. In City of Gold, he was taken to the big city, only for them to be reunited as teenagers a decade later.

There Are Other Major Differences Between The Live-Action Dora Movies

Sol Dorado Doesn’t Square With The Lost City Of Gold

There are a number of other clues throughout Dora and the Search for Sol Dorado that prove that it is a reboot rather than a continuation of The Lost City of Gold.

For instance, in the 2019 movie, the thieving red fox Swiper talks, just like he does in the original Dora the Explorer show. However, in Sol Dorado, even though Swiper is present, he does not talk. He has also been significantly redesigned to look more like a real fox rather than an anthropomorphic, bipedal fox wearing a bandanna.

In Sol Dorado, Swiper is a henchman for the villain Camila (Daniella Pineda), an original character who is not present in The Lost City of Gold.

Additionally, as Dora and the Search for Sol Dorado continues, other major elements of Dora’s backstory are revealed to have been significantly altered. This includes the new movie giving no indication that Dora’s parents are explorers like they are in The Lost City of Gold, and the fact that her childhood home has been completely redesigned.
