James Gunn Reveals The Deep-Cut DC Character That Would Make Him Give An Instant Green Light

DC Studios head James Gunn reveals the DC character he wants to add to the DCU the most. James Gunn’s DCU has already introduced or confirmed several characters with wild abilities, origin stories, or physical appearances. From Creature Commandos‘ Task Force M to Superman‘s ridiculous Guy Gardner and the returning Peacemaker, the DCU will be inhabited by dozens of characters who would have been considered too unrealistic to adapt only a decade ago.

Speaking to ScreenRant‘s Ash Crossan at the Superman press junket, James Gunn revealed that he really wants to see Bat-Mite on the screen soon. Gunn joked he loves the character so much that he would immediately greenlight Matt Reeves’ The Batman – Part II script right away if Reeves included Bat-Mite in it. Read Gunn’s full quote below:

There are a lot of new characters that we meet, and a lot we’re going to meet. Is there a niche DC character or story that you think deserves more attention – whether you’re developing it or not – just someone you’d love to bring to the forefront?

James Gunn: Everybody knows I love Bat-Mite. Bat-Mite’s like… my man. He’s creepy as hell. I think I’ve got to do something with Bat-Mite someday. I don’t know how to do it – unless Matt’s doing it in his script. I got his script yesterday and haven’t had a chance to read it yet. Maybe Matt Reeves put Bat-Mite in the script. If you did, Matt, I’m going to be really, really stoked. Instant green light.

What James Gunn’s Bat-Mite Comments Mean

Bat-Mite’s Chances To Appear In A DC Movie Or Show Are At An All-Time High

Bat-Mite is one of the silliest parts of Batman’s DC Comics lore. Batman’s magical imp fan from the fifth dimension often visits the Dark Knight to aid him in battle, though he usually just serves as a minor nuisance. Bat-Mite is such an extravagant character that he would seem out of place in campy adaptations like Batman Forever and the 1960s Batman series, but not in a world where Batman coexists with Krypto the Superdog and giant fire-breathing monsters.

James Gunn’s comments on the possibility of The Batman – Part II‘s script featuring Bat-Mite are made in jest, but his excitement about Bat-Mite’s potential DCU introduction seems genuine. After decades of continuous Batman reinventions, the DCU’s mᴀssive scale and interconnected nature allows previously unexplored stories and characters to finally make their debut on the big and the small screen. This applies to characters as absurd as Bat-Mite.

Our Take On James Gunn’s Bat-Mite Comments

James Gunn Must Know How To Make Bat-Mite Work In The DCU

Bat-Mite may seem like a difficult character to adapt, especially to live-action. However, James Gunn has proved time and again that even the most outlandish characters can be just as compelling as world-famous heroes. James Gunn made Rocket Raccoon and Groot MCU royalty in his Guardians of the Galaxy movies and then turned anti-heroes like King Shark and Polka-Dot Man into fan favorites in The Suicide Squad. Peacemaker also saw the тιтular vigilante turn his public perception around within a single season.

Now, James Gunn is making Superman’s external red trunks and Guy Gardner’s bowl cut work on the big screen. After Superman, many other heroes and villains may follow. With the right script and redesign, Bat-Mite could easily rise through the ranks of popularity in the DCU.
