The creator of the new DC Universe addresses whether Batman and Superman have already met. David Corenswet’s Man of Steel and the DCU’s Dark Knight have already briefly appeared in the same project, though in animated form as cameos in James Gunn’s Creature Commandos, the first project of the new DC Universe. As for live-action, Batman has a movie confirmed.
However, Superman will reach the big screen before him, with Gunn’s Superman movie flying into theaters in just one week. Batman is not expected to make a surprise appearance in the film, as DC Studios is not even close to casting the new Bruce Wayne. At the moment, the studio’s Dark Knight focus is on Matt Reeves’ The Batman sequel.
Speaking with ExtraTV, James Gunn revealed he had not read Matt Reeves’ The Batman – Part II script and teased how David Corenswet’s Superman would react to meeting Batman.

While the script for Robert Pattinson’s Batman sequel is finished, Gunn has yet to read it. As for Corenswet’s Clark Kent meeting the DCU Batman, which all signs point to not being Pattinson, the Superman movie director teased that Batman and Superman might have already met, saying, “We don’t know he hasn’t already seen a man dressed as a bat.”
What James Gunn’s DCU Batman & Superman Meeting Comments Mean
The Dark Knight And The Man Of Steel Having Met Would Make Sense
Based on Gunn’s comments, it seems like DC might still have to figure out which heroes have or have not crossed paths offscreen before the start of the DCU. In Gunn’s Superman movie, David Corenswet’s Man of Steel will work alongside the Justice Gang, which includes Nathan Fillion’s Green Lantern, Edi Gathegi’s Mister Terrific, and Isabela Merced’s Hawkgirl.
The Justice Gang works for Maxwell Lord and operates out of the Hall of Justice.
That shows how Superman has already met other DCU heroes before fans first get to see him. It leaves the door open for Superman and Batman to have worked together in the past, like Gunn teases could be the case. The director also explained that Superman would see a kindred spirit in Batman, which means they would likely be friends.
Our Take On James Gunn’s DCU Batman & Superman Meeting Comments
I think the way the DCU is setting up the world to feel lived-in with Creature Commandos, Superman, and the rest of its first projects is exciting. As Corenswet’s Clark Kent has been Superman for a few years before we first see him, it would make sense for him and Batman to have already met.
Given how Batman’s The Brave and the Bold movie will include Damian Wayne and other Bat-Family members, he has been active for a while. I believe Batman’s detective nature would mean he has already checked out Superman to see if he is a threat. I hope the DCU shows their first meeting, even if it has already happened.
