Superman’s Opening Scene Where The Man of Steel Falls Short Teased By David Corenswet

David Corenswet reveals what got him excited about Superman and teases the movie’s opening scene. Superman is the first film in the new DC Universe, which means all eyes are on how it will perform. Quite a few Superman movie trailers have teased that this version of the Man of Steel will not be as invincible as expected.

During a Superman set visit, which ScreenRant and other members of the press attended, Clark Kent actor David Corenswet explained how Superman falling short in the DC movie’s opening scene was exciting to him. While the actor did not reveal who his character was fighting in the sequence, Corenswet confirmed that it was “the fight of his life at that point.”

The DCU’s first movie starts with plenty of excitement, throwing viewers right into the action, with “very little world-building to start.” Despite Superman’s best efforts, not a lot will be working the way he expects during the DC movie’s opening fight. However, that is positive for Corenswet, as Superman is “very heavily tested.” Check out the full quote below:

David Corenswet: “Reading the script, the start was very flashy, and immediately got me excited. There’s very little world building to start. You start with the way I like to start any movie, which is a character who you’re meeting in an interesting circumstance, who’s got a very clear problem and needs to overcome it. The way I think you learn about a character, or an iteration of a character in this case, is watching what strategies they employ to overcome whatever their big problem is to begin with, and how they react. How their spirit reacts. How they react when they fail, or when they fall short. When a strategy doesn’t work.

And that’s the whole opening sequence of this movie. You’re seeing Superman right in the middle of a big fight—the fight of his life at that point, although he’ll have bigger ones later, of course. And really, he’s throwing everything he’s got at this fight, and very few things are working. A couple of things work a little bit for a moment. But it’s really seeing a character who generally should be thought of as The Man of Steel. A lot of people think of him as invincible and impervious and always optimistic and hopeful. And you’re seeing him in a moment where all of that is being very heavily tested. And so, as a moment to meet the character—and especially where he doesn’t really overcome… he doesn’t lose, but he doesn’t win. To have that be the jumping off point for the rest of the story was really fun, because it leaves you everywhere to go, which is always great with character, to start strong and still have everywhere to go.”

What David Corenswet’s Superman Opening Scene Comments Mean

The DC Universe Movie Will See The Hero Struggle

David Corenswet’s comments track with what has been shown in the film so far. The Superman movie trailers have not attempted to hide the fact that the DCU’s Man of Steel will not be as invincible as Henry Cavill’s Clark Kent or some other live-action iterations of the character. Superman’s powers will be formidable, but his humanity is the focus.

The first teaser trailer for Superman opened with the hero bleeding in the snow. It is clear that the upcoming DC movie will feature some impressive fights that will challenge the Man of Steel physically and in other ways. Based on Corenswet’s comments, that really spoke to him. The idea that this powerful hero starts the film facing such hardship is exciting.

As Corenswet explains, the DC film starts on a high but keeps going up from there. Fans should expect an action-packed sequence that sees the hero struggling against an enemy. Perhaps that could be the kaiju that has been shown in several Superman trailers, as Ultraman and other characters would probably work better after the world-building has been done.

Our Take On David Corenswet’s Superman Opening Scene Comments

Corenswet’s Superman Will Face Multiple Threats In His Debut

Based on the actor’s comments, I feel like James Gunn’s Superman movie will start with a thrilling sequence. Clark Kent and many of the film’s characters are well-known enough that DC does not need to begin with world-building. Like Corenswet, I feel that an opening fight sequence where Superman is struggling can show a lot about him.

Superman‘s confirmed villains include Lex Luthor, the Engineer, the Hammer of Boravia, Ultraman, and more.

Superman is an all-powerful being. So, having the character start the film at a disadvantage and trying to find a way to beat a threat in every way he can think of should explain how this version of Superman works. I find it interesting that Corenswet says Superman “doesn’t lose, but he doesn’t win.” I wonder what he means.

Perhaps it could be a villain that Superman will have to face again later. He could then be prepared to take on the threat. On the other hand, it could be that Superman does neutralize the threat, but too many lives are lost, so he has to get better. I’m excited to discover how Superman‘s opening scene plays out.

Superman arrives in theaters on July 11.
