Kang may be old news in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), but Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars need to clear up one major loose thread from his storyline. The MCU has swiftly moved beyond Kang the Conqueror since the actor was let go by Marvel Studios. However, early on in the Multiverse Saga, he was set up to become the new big bad.
And while the character is now beyond even the Void, there are still remnants of his plan. Kang and his many variants appeared to be a mᴀssive threat to the Multiverse, and all of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, but after the fall of Kang, there remains a central organization that could prove to be an obstacle or a tool for the Multiverse’s new big bad, Doctor Doom.
While Kang was initially positioned as the greatest threat to the multiverse, and someone who could travel between realities, his creation may not provide a way for the new MCU big bad to break out of his timeline.
The TVA Was Set Up To Be A Huge Part Of The Multiverse Saga
The Time Variance Authority Played An Important Role In Setting Up The Multiverse Saga
The Time Variance Authority appears to play an important role behind the scenes of the multiverse. Working between realities, this agency was able to pluck individuals from their timeline, and banish them to the wasteland known as the Void. But beyond that, they could also wipe entire timelines from existence.
A variant of Loki, who broke the natural path of progress in his timeline, was taken by the TVA, only to become the first person to reach He Who Remains, the creator of the TVA. It was at this point that Loki learned He Who Remains is a Kang variant, with others like him all gearing up to have a multiversal war.
However, He Who Remains established the TVA to keep the Kang’s in order. For an eternity, the TVA kept the balance between the timelines, and realities ebbed and flowed. But with the death of He Who Remains, the fate of the multiverse was thrown into uncertainty.
However, there are other ways that the TVA may become a significant part of the story of the MCU and the Multiverse Saga as things progress. From Doctor Doom’s arrival, to Loki’s power upgrade, a lot changes in a short time.
Loki Season 2 Mostly Made The TVA Obselete
Loki Embraced His Glorious Purpose In The Multiverse Saga
This was largely covered in Loki season 2, when Loki manages to recruit another Kang variant, Victor Timely, to help bring balance back to the multiverse before all realities collapse. The TVA tried desperately to restore balance, but in the end, it was Loki who saved the multiverse.
Through his sacrifice, and his incredible power, Loki was able to take hold of all the individual strings of reality, and ensure their survival with his watchful protection. But of course, this meant the TVA’s prime directive to balance the timelines was now being handled by one god, leaving them largely aimless.
However, it appears that the TVA remained intact, despite the death of He Who Remains, and Loki’s new role as the God of Stories.
Regardless, Loki’s position puts the TVA in a weird spot trying to reinvent itself, and to get a deeper insight into what their objective is. Later in the MCU, this idea was touched on, but despite answering some questions, many more remain unresolved.
ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine Revealed Big Changes In The TVA
The TVA Is Under New Management By Phase 5
Ravonna Renslayer initially took responsibility for the day-to-day dealings of the TVA. And as a lover to He Who Remains, she was left broken after his death. Ultimately, she left the TVA, and the leadership appears to have changed hands. This is best seen in ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine.
In ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine, it appears as though B-15, formerly a Hunter at the TVA, is now the lead judge of the organization. And as the head, she has made some changes to the way they operate. This includes giving her agents directives to simply watch their timelines, and ensuring they come to an end naturally, following the death of anchor beings.
Not everyone on her staff agrees with B-15’s ideas about how to handle the multiverse, and some attempt to take matters into their own hands, but the TVA is now a disorganized mess. And while it was initially intended to be a major part of the Multiverse Saga, and a tool for Kang and his variants to come through and wreak havoc, it’s now largely aimless.
This includes giving her agents directives to simply watch their timelines.
And yet, the film made no mention of Loki, or other ways that the TVA operates. It still appears that the TVA is pruning variants from timelines, and the idea of anchor beings being a foundation of their timeline was introduced.
Avengers: Doomsday & Secret Wars Ideally Need To Address The TVA In Their Stories
The Multiverse Saga Needs To Acknowledge The TVA
Despite the change in leadership, and the loose directive of the TVA, they could still be a big part of the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars films. With Loki confirmed to return, it seems certain that the TVA will be back in some capacity.
With the TVA operating as an observation unit for the multiverse, it seems likely that they could spot Doctor Doom’s machinations ahead of time. If this is the case, it would make sense for them to warn heroes, or try to recruit others who can help to quell the threat.
However, with their incredible technology and the ease with which they can travel through the multiverse, they may also have a target on their backs. If Doctor Doom gets wind of the TVA, and their capacity to open portals to other realities, they could become a key part of his plan to take over the multiverse, and abduct countless heroes from their own timelines.
The TVA’s role could also be minimized in the final chapters of the Multiverse Saga, but that would be incredibly dissatisfying. If the MCU wants to actually move on from these discarded plots, it needs to at least make an effort to reconcile what happened between films. And having the TVA play a part in the upcoming adventure could be a great way to tie things together.
In this way, the TVA could still be a huge part of the story in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, but it’s a very clear shift from their original purpose as a roadblock to Kang the Conqueror and his Council of Kang’s.
