Street Fighter’s New Dan Hibiki Star Confirms Casting & Addresses High-Stakes Video Game Movie: “They’re Doing It Right”

The upcoming Street Fighter reboot has cast Andrew Schulz as Dan Hibiki, and the actor has shared his thoughts on the project with Screen Rant. Directed by Kitao Sakurai, the film has been picking up a pretty impressive cast. So far, the Street Fighter cast has been confirmed to include Jason Momoa, Andrew Koji, and 50 Cent.

They’ll also be joined by comedian Andrew Schulz, who has joined the film as Dan Hibiki. Introduced in Street Fighter Alpha: Warriors’ Dreams as a parody of SNK’s Art of Fighting series, Dan has become a surprisingly enduring part of the franchise. During a conversation with Screen Rant about the project, Schulz opened up about his history with the franchise and his thoughts on the film.

[I was] obsessed with Street Fighter growing up. In middle school, I would take all my parents spare change and go to a deli during lunch and play Marvel vs. Capcom… I’m playing Dan Hibiki. There’s some cool lore about his character. They created him in a later Street Fighter game as an insult to a compeтιтive game trying to rip off Street Fighter. [The script] is really good. We still got to make the movie. But the script is great. Not sure what I can share. But they’re doing it right.

The fact that Street Fighter is shaping up to be a favorite for fans of the original games is an encouraging development for the new film. Street Fighter has been one of the fixtures of the fighting genre in gaming for decades, with plenty of versions making their way to the big screen (to infamously mixed results)

The thing is, Street Fighter has a very delicate balance of cool action, dramatic character moments, unexpected twists, and just a touch of humor. There’s no other way the franchise could have a character like Dan Hibiki as a consistent figure in the games, a gag character who has steadily developed his own history, backstory, and role in the franchise.

Dan’s inclusion in Street Fighter, along with the suggestion that the creatives behind the scenes are “doing it right” according to Schulz, implies that the movie is trying to replicate that balance. Schulz’s excitement for the project reflects the same feelings of the fandom, which is good news for other excited fans.

Our Take On 2026’s Street Fighter “Getting It Right”

Street Fighter Has Great Cinematic Potential

If done right, Street Fighter could easily become a major blockbuster tentpole. It has all the makings of a good action movie baked into its premise, especially because it seems to be incorporating more elements of Ryu and Ken’s storyline. An epic tale of karate and corruption, Dan’s presence implies their training will be in the film.

Beyond just the inclusion of Dan (which suggests the film will spend time with their martial-arts master, Gouken), there’s also the presence of Roman Reigns as Akuma. One of the franchise’s big bads, his feud with Ryu seems increasingly likely to be a part of the movie — especially if characters like Dan are in the film.

Dan’s inclusion ensures that the film won’t be too serious, though. Street Fighter has a lot of ridiculous and silly elements, and bringing both aspects of the тιтle to the big screen is the key to a good adaptation. Andrew Sculz’s casting and his comments about Street Fighter have us hopeful the movie will do right by longtime fans of the series.
