Steven Spielberg‘s highly anticipated next film has revealed its first bit of footage, and it sounds like it promises a thrilling new adventure from the acclaimed director. Set for release in June 2026, the unтιтled feature will be Spielberg’s first since The Fabelmans in 2022.
Most details about the feature are a closely guarded secret, though it has been reported that it will be a sci-fi feature that harkens back to the director’s previous work in the genre. It will star Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, Wyatt Russell, Colman Domingo, and Colin Firth.
Variety was present at a special event in Los Angeles where Universal unveiled a new screening room named after Spielberg. At the event, the very first footage from the director’s upcoming film was revealed, offering peeks at Blunt, O’Connor, Domingo, and Eve Hewson in character and in action. Per Variety, the footage went like this:
Spielberg introduced a behind-the-scenes clip that didn’t quite confirm an alien theme, though plenty of menacing figures in unmarked black cars were seen chasing Blunt (who appeared in several scenes as an everywoman in a rural area). In one sequence with O’Connor, Blunt’s busted sedan collides with a speeding train. She and O’Connor attempt an escape through the broken windshield as the vehicle gets chewed alive between screeching metal and the tracks.
Hewson and Domingo’s characters weren’t clearly defined in the footage, though they’re on the business end of a cat-and-mouse game that explodes through farmhouses and terrorizes pedestrians. If we had to put money on it, Firth is our bad guy. The Academy Award winner looks sinister and well-suited as a leader in some kind of underground workspace (one that resembles a NASA control room and the like).
What This Means For Spielberg’s New Sci-Fi Movie
There Are Some Tantalizing Clues To Be Gleaned
Without knowing any concrete plot details, it’s hard to draw any conclusions about Spielberg’s movie, but the footage description provides some clues. To start, the mention of menacing figures in black cars chasing after Blunt calls to mind the government agents who went after E.T.
That, along with the notion of Firth playing a sinister leader, gives the impression that Spielberg’s movie will focus on some kind of conspiracy, one that rocks a small town and has everyday people, such as Blunt’s character, going up against a mysterious enтιтy. It feels very much in line with Spielberg’s past movies in the sci-fi space.
Spielberg’s most beloved sci-fi movies include E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial and Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
It also sounds like the movie will be pretty action-packed, which is an interesting switch for Spielberg after projects like The Fabelmans and West Side Story. He hasn’t made a traditional action movie since 2018’s Ready Player One, but he is responsible for iconic features like Raiders of the Lost Ark, so this return is quite exciting.
Our Take On Steven Spielberg’s Next Movie
It Could Be A Perfect Summer Blockbuster
Getting excited about a film from just a few words rather than the visuals themselves might seem silly, but I can’t help but feel pumped for Spielberg’s latest movie after reading about the footage. It sounds like he’s building a pulse-pounding sci-fi adventure that feels reminiscent of some of his best work.
Spielberg’s unтιтled movie is scheduled for June 12, 2026, putting it right in prime summer territory. Seeing as Spielberg essentially invented the summer blockbuster with Jaws, it’s incredibly exciting to see him make another movie that fits this bill.
The footage description sets up a project that will be perfect for the big screen, further suggesting this could be one of the biggest movies of 2026. It will likely be a while before the footage is made public, but so far, it sounds like Spielberg has something excellent on his hands.
