Jack Black & Jason Momoa’s First Movies After Minecraft Can’t Be Seen By Their Newest Fans

Jason Momoa and Jack Black are having a huge year in 2025 thanks to one тιтle: A Minecraft Movie. Despite the film’s trailer being subject to some ridicule by audiences, public opinion made a 180 once the movie was actually released in theaters. The film was well-liked in spite of some technical flaws, and even spurred multiple viral trends.

The A Minecraft Movie craze had a tangible impact on ticket sales. Though the film ultimately missed the $1 billion mark, it brought in an impressive $954.4 million worldwide. This positions the movie as the second highest-grossing film of the year on a global level, and the no. 1 domestically (though it could still be usurped by Lilo & Sтιтch, among other тιтles).

This is especially great news for the already-impressive careers of Momoa and Black. The film has cemented Black as a leading force in the video game adaptation since The Super Mario Bros. Movie is among his highest-grossing movies.

The film also pushed Momoa past another box office milestone. Adding up the roles in which he played the lead, lead ensemble, or supporting character, the actor has now grossed over $5 billion in his career. These are great milestones for both actors, but their career futures create complications for their audiences.

A Minecraft Movie Made Jack Black & Jason Momoa Huge Stars With Kids

And In A Way They Had Not Been Before

The primary audience for A Minecraft Movie was children. Playing Steve, one of the most well-liked characters from the original video games, Black’s lines are now quoted by young audiences. A particularly popular moment came when the actor said “chicken jockey,” referring to a popular figure from the video games.

Both Black and Momoa now have an audience that they may not have quite captured before. Momoa has played Aquaman, so he probably had a pre-teen audience from his DC days. Black is the voice of Po in Kung Fu Panda, so he has acted in the children’s film market.

Younger kids, however, were not going to make the connection that it was Black voicing the beloved panda in those films. Similarly, Momoa is now appealing to a younger audience than he did before. This carves a new niche for both actors.

Jack Black & Jason Momoa’s Next Movies Are R-Rated Comedies Kids Can’t See

This Loses Some Of Their Core Audience

As some of the most actively working actors in Hollywood, both A Minecraft Movie stars have upcoming films later this year. But, unfortunately, these are not nearly as appropriate for children.

Black’s next film will be Anaconda, which is a comedic jungle adventure that is a reboot of the 1997 film of the same name. While its predecessor was rated PG-13, it has been widely reported that the 2025 version of this story will be rated R.

Momoa’s next theatrical release is likely going to be Animal Friends. This Peter Atencio-directed movie is an adult-animated comedy about two animals who become unlikely friends. It also stars Ryan Reynolds, Aubrey Plaza, Dan Levy, Lil Rel Howery, and Addison Rae.

While the animated world may be more typically a kids’ domain, Animal Friends is planned to be a raunchier film aimed at adults. This means that neither Black nor Momoa’s next films will be aimed at kids without a parent going with them.

When Will Jack Black & Jason Momoa Return To Kid-Friendly Movies?

Momoa May Take A While

Jack Black as Bowser looks sad while talking to Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach in The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

Black is guaranteed to return to kid-oriented media with The Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel. While the plot is unknown, Black is likely to return to voice Bowser. The film is slated for release on April 3, 2026, making it Black’s next kid-friendly film.

Both actors will definitely return for the A Minecraft Movie sequel. As for Momoa, his next film that is on the family-friendly side is Supergirl, but even that is not as kid-oriented. As such, the wait for Momoa to engage with the young audience again may continue for a while longer.
